An investigation is underway after one of Vancouver Island's main electricity supply links was damaged by contractors working on the Deltaport container terminal expansion, Vancouver port officials reported on Thursday.

The Vancouver Port Authority said contractors clearing the site for the Deltaport third berth project repeatedly dumped dredge material over a period of weeks outside of a permitted dumping area.

The material landed on the undersea high voltage electrical cable linking Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland.

BC Transmission Corporation said the damage has not impacted service to Vancouver Island customers. The aging high voltage power lines are scheduled for replacement.
