Riding a bus or a skytrain will cost you more, come January.

The Translink board has approved a fare increase to pay for its bus fleet expansion, but not before some loud opposition.

They shouted, chanted and pleaded with Translink not to raise transit fares.

But in the end, the Bus Riders Union couldn't convince the Translink board not to approve the increase.

You’ll now pay $2.50 for a single-zone pass, up 25 cents.

I commute daily to NowPublic Global HQ on the bus. I arrive at the bum-crack of dawn, catching the first bus of the day. I'm maybe three stops from the beginning of the rout, but the bus is routinely late. My point is, if we give Translink ten bucks, they'll waste ten bucks. Give them fifteen, they'll waste fifteen. Such a car-centric city needs better public transit; our current system is relatively expensive for what we get: If I want to be anywhere on time, it's better for me to ride my bicycle, or, if worse comes to worst, drive.
