Vancouver Sun reporting sloppy on Downtown Eastside

After a career as a Vancouver Sun reporter spanning 25 years, Bob Sarti has admitted that he did not always let the facts get in the way of a good story.  "But that's the way it was/is in the mainstream media," Sarti wrote in a letter published in the Carnegie newsletter.

Judging from the Sun's faulty coverage of the Downtown Eastside, Sarti is correct.  The Downtown Eastside Enquirer examines the Sun's coverage of issues ranging from televisions being thrown from windows to residents getting help from Carnegie social workers.  Did I mention that Carnegie social workers don't exist?

Examples are provided in the article on the Downtown Eastside Enquirer.  Would you prefer that I mention them in my brief summary on NowPublic?

Tv's are found in alleys. Some people take useable parts from them leaving a mess making them and other items discarded in back alleys. Yes sometimes people get carried away thowing things out of windows all over the world. Why should Vancouver be an exception?

There is a continuing photographic series, consisting of hundreds of color slides, (circa 1999) by renowned photographer Lincoln Clarkes. Entitled As Is, it captures the extreme tragedy and texture in the epicenter of Canada’s heroin ghetto in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The images depict the struggles that are faced daily by those living in the Downtown Eastside.  They are powerful photos that present a detailed account of the underreported reality of the situation.  Go to this website to see the photos.  http://www.orato.com/node/1919
