Wait, Don't Go
That is what at least one Iraqi policeman told Mario Loyola when interviewed. I first learned about this happening in the most recent edition of National Review. Mario Loyola is an embed in Iraq and what he round in Ramadi, the capital of the Al Anbar Province, I hope is illustrative of the greater changes going on in that country.
Al Qaeda has made many more mistakes than we have over in Iraq. Killing tribal leaders is just not something you do if you want to be respected. But we still have to worry about them because, according to what the lieutenant said in the article (not online yet, sorry) is that while al Qaeda is not in the provincial police force they have significantly infiltrated the local police forces.
Another powerful point made in the article, The New Anbar, is that for us to be successful we need to deliver basics like sewage, water, electricity and trash services. Without a doubt the most powerful point of the whole article is that they do not want us to leave because the second we do al Qaeda will take over and, I think, kill all those who supported us and the fledgling Iraqi state.
