There has been widespread shock over speculation the world's leading wicket-taker Shane Warne is set to retire after the Ashes series.

It has been reported that Warne could call a media conference as early as today to announce he will retire after the final Ashes Test in Sydney.

He only needs one wicket to be the first player to take 700 Test wickets.

The speculation has been met with shock in cricket circles with former Australian bowler Geoff Lawson telling FOX Sports Warne could play on for years.

"I'm absolutely gobsmacked by this - he's just bowling so terrifically," he said.

"I thought he might still have another three, four years left in the game and in fact I've lost a lot of money because I backed him to take 1,000 Test wickets and it's not going to happen now.""

I've been following some of this on BBC World when I can't sleep (cricket reports seem to come on NPR at 3am or so).  I can't understand a word being spoken. It helps me to sleep!

But for all those who watch this closely, many thanks for putting it up!

Thanks, Mark.

Cricket seems to be a sport that you need to be brought up on. I played heaps of it at school and watched a lot over the 70's/'80s but then stopped. Last year I took my Father to the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and fell in love with it again.
