Watch Out, These Urban Warriors Will Get Medieval On You

VANCOUVER, BC - An evening stroll along the banks of Jericho Beach Thursday evening turned into a time warp of jousting, dueling, and knights in not so shining armour. Luckily a digital camera was on hand to capture the action, see the attached photos and two videos, VIDEO 1 & VIDEO 2 (while the videos are being processed on NowPublic you can view them on YouTube VIDEO 1 & VIDEO 2 )

The combatants turned out to be members of the Medieval Recreation Society, also known as The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), not lost time travelers. The group is devoted to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre 17th century Europe. Here's a link to the society's website

The SCA, founded 42 years ago, claims to have over 30,000 members in 19 kingdoms. The Vancouver contingent touts around 500 members.

The organization is not limited to recreating battles but also holds activities related to chivalry, arts & science, and heraldry.

Annual battles are held where over 17,000 individuals gather to battle each other in groups of 2,000 or more.

Good stuff! Thankfully you had the camera handy! There is a local group that does similar stuff with hand to hand medieval combat. I haven't gotten a chance to talk to them yet...but I always wondered "what are they doing?"
