Waterlogged Chicago

Heavy rains in the Windy City made for a rough commute last night, especially around the Irving Park exit. Lots of roads, cars and basements were flooded.

Heavy rain caused flooding under many underpasses and intersections.

Lake Shore Drive northbound was at a standstill as many exit ramps were closed.

The North Avenue, Belmont, Irving Park and Montrose exits were closed for a time.

Under the Irving Park overpass, three to four feet of water clogged the roadway. Three vehicles even got stuck as drivers tried to make their way across. A tow truck was their only way out.

Jeff Pierce says he had his driver drop him off on the side of the road so he could walk faster to his destination but was still unsure how he would cross Lake Shore Drive and get home.

A CTA bus even dropped off its passengers at the top of the Irving Park Exit and most passengers had to fend for themselves the rest of the way.

Many took of their shoes, rolled up their pants and waded to the other side.

The Irving Park Exit was reopened about 6:30 p.m.
