Approaching Typhoon Krosa Dumps Rain on Taiwan
Typhoon Krosa (Ineng) has taken a turn westward and is now threatening the island nation of Taiwan. The suddenness and intensity of the rainfall has caught many residents by surprise, as seen in these photos which show some people riding scooters, and on foot.

Hukou, Taiwan
There is a feeling in the air, and it's not just the humidity. It's anticipation, of the kind that can only preceed a killer typhoon. Recent updates show that Krosa will indeed make landfall on Taiwan sometime on Saturday. The graphic below is constantly updated so be sure to refresh your browser for the latest image.

I took this shot in the early morning, facing the Taiwan Straight. Overhead the clouds were moving rapidly from NW to SE, which is exactly what happens in a counter-clockwise rotational pattern typical of tropical cyclones.

Shot facing just E of due North.

This overhead shot tells the tale: Relatively clear upper layer with fast moving dense cloud layers at low altitude.

Hukou, Taiwan
One thing that I dislike about these storms is that while they clean out the air, they often litter the ground with blown trash. Here are a couple of shots of the same street as above, showing all the flowers that have blown off the trees.

There are thousands of these things, and no one is going to clean them up.

I think that after this weekend our beautiful trees will be denuded of flowers.

thanks for the nice comments. we should be OK as even though we are located about 2km from the Taiwan straight, our elevation is on the order of 90m above sea level. at this writing, its 02:04 10/05/2007 and the rain is coming down hard! tomorrow should be interesting....

Well done! I also think you deserve praise for being an eyewitness, and for your investigative efforts. Good stuff.

Our local Thai restaurant owner, Shao-hui (as seen on our blog many times) has announced that she will have a typhoon grill party tomorrow night! The typhoon is supposed to make landfall then. We'll see what happens! Of course I will have photos of the event in any case!
