Central and eastern China continues to bear the full brunt of severe winter weather and there is now end in sight to the snow and ice. Large swathes of the country have been hit by the worst snowfalls in over a decade and today Shanghai received the largest amount of snow since 1984 according to the Shanghai Daily.

Xinhua News Agency reports that over 24 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands left stranded as a result of railway and highway closures. In the southern city of Guangzhou, in Guangdong province, over 200,000 people were stranded at the railway station after train services were cancelled due to power failures in neighbouring provinces. This week marks the beginning of the peak travel period of Chinese New Year where hundreds of millions of people travel the country for family reunions.

According to Xinhua over hundred thousand home have been destroyed and direct economic losses are estimated to be $3 billion USD.

TyphoonHunter, great work, I will add you to my friends so I can keep up with this.

What happened to Global Warming?  When I asked that, while in Alaska the Geological Survey told me that in some areas, where it is unusually cold, Global warming will actually cause more snow, because it has to warm up to snow in those areas.  Like Fairbanks, Barrow, Yukon, NWT

And in some instances Global Warming causes people to believe everything is the cause of Global Warming, why I spilled my coffee on my laptop this morning, the Cause? You guessing Global Warming caused by the unstability of rapid heating of my shade grown free trade coffee beans frothing over my coffee mug, burning my coffee cup holding fingers, hence, wonders never cease. http://www.junkscience.com/

Anyone who has studied tree rings, stalactite and stalagmites, ice cores and other organics, no one will disagree that climate retards their growth.  Asia (China) goes through little ice ages as most countries on earth century by century.  Remember the Korean War and CHina, it was said thn that ti was the coldest recorded in World history, until modern technology in the 80s found it was actually much colder in the 17th century, was it Glabal Warming, Hell No, it is Mother Friggin Nature, fickle as she is, our earth goes through cold and warm cycles every hundred years.  China is no different.

There's been a lot of snow by Shanghai standards over night. I'm not sure how long ago there was this much but it'll have been a long time. I'm just about to go out to work so when I get home I'll upload lots of pics.

Hey Brian. I just uploaded a few more.

Half a foot fell last night just to the north of the city on Chongming Island according to the Shanghai Daily. Temperatures are now below zero so ice form snow melt early in the day will be a problem.
