Sky watchers will be treated to a red light in the sky this Christmas eve and it's not Rudolph.
Astronomers say the planet Mars, as well as the moon, will shine exceptionally brightly on Monday night because of its positioning relative to the Earth and sun. Mars will sit "in opposition" to the sun, which means it will be directly opposite to it, giving its red surface a brighter than normal reflection to viewers on Earth.
The planet won't be as noticeable for another nine years, astronomers said.

Ryan, Mars was very visible yesterday evening, December 23, after the rain ended here on the U.S. east coast. The full moon was shining with a distinctly reddish object glowing to the right of it.

Shot of the moon, considerably fast shutter speed due to the brightness.

This image of Mars was taken on 12/21/07 from the Dallas, TX area. While captured from my light-polluted backyard, many planetary objects are of a magnitude that they are easily imaged, even in bright skies. Equipment used:
Meade 8" LX90-LNT Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope
ToUcam 740k Web Camera
Exposure of approx. 2/10 sec. 500 images captured and stacked using DeepSkyStacker.

I am a photo hobbyist. Often alone in a nature with which I go from surprised in surprise. the extreme limpidity of the air, the distance from the moon closer than usually, this aspect of a Sahel 's desert for the ground, made me thought so that could be a moon lifting over terraformed Mars. I like much this photograph. It makes me become aware of our brittleness vis-a-vis to all that. (sorry for my imperfect English:)

Hi, thank you for using my photo, nandel. Actually mars was very close to the moon Sunday night as you can see in one of the photos. It looked like a very bright star and it accompanied the moon throught the sky. Even if you don't know this is mars, you should have guessed, because usually there's no star this close to the moon.
Last night, however, it wasn't so close to the moon, it was close to the "dome" of the sky, around east-north-east. And it was VERY red bright. I decided to take the photo shown above. I used Sony DSC H7 at full telephoto and also digital zoom (x30 total). Of course on a tripod. no other fancy equipment!
I wish next time mars will show (2013 as they say), I will have a telescope and a DSLR to take some proper photos...Till then....!

this was an wonderful experience...we had a gate-together w/my friends in the evening...when went out to see off them...I noticed Mars is clearly visible in the sky....close to Moon.....I tempted to bring my Nikon R 300 mm lens....it was really great to see behind the lens....
