Snow Heads to Eastern US

That snowstorm that wreaked havoc across the Midwest yesterday is now heading East. Chicago's Midway Airport reported five inches of snow this am, and more than 600 flights were cancelled out of O'Hare. Can't wait 'till it hits NYC later in the day -- although apparently we're going to get more slush than snow.

Between eight to 12 inches of snow was forecast for the Chicago area by Friday afternoon.

"It looks like this morning's rush hour is going to be really impacted," National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Merzlock said. "With what's going to be coming down at the rate it'll be coming down, all the roads are going to be snow packed and snow covered."

Elsewhere, Indianapolis received less than 2 inches of snow overnight, despite predictions for much more. But the National Weather Service said northern Indiana could get up to a foot of snow. Fort Wayne had received 4 inches by early Friday.

Hundreds of schools in Michigan canceled class Friday in anticipation of the storm, which was expected to drop as many as 13 inches of snow in the southeastern portion of the state. Up to 4 inches had fallen by early Friday.

Billowing snow in the Texas Panhandle caused a 40-car pileup on Interstate 40 on Thursday that killed at least person. Three other deaths were blamed on the storm, two in Texas and one in Oklahoma.

The storm pounded areas of the Midwest still rebounding from storms earlier in the week that spawned a mix of snow, brutal cold, tornadoes and hail.

The system was expected to move into the Northeast later Friday, bringing with it a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

Its been snowing only 3 hours but Interstate 90 in Chicago is already at a stand still. A CTA Blue Line train is making good time compared to the traffic on I-90.

This was taken at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN with my cell phone. I had just gotten in (around 6AM) after driving on the roads, which hadn't been plowed or even touched. I was actually a bit miffed at the fact that I felt I'd been "lied to," as local news was reporting that the county had been "out all night" working to keep the roads clear. They were nowhere close to clear. Purdue, of course, has only closed twice in its existence, and today is no exception. I'm glad I made it, but now I'm worried about getting home.

Moral of the story: never schedule exams and papers to be due the day a snowstorm hits.

Frost crystals growing on my window early on the morning of January 30, 2008. The previous day, we had a high of close to 70F. By mid-afternoon, it was near 20F with gusty winds and horizontal blowing snow.

I was just sitting in the car outside the B gate at O'Hare international, it had been snowing for quite some time...A lot of the streets were just mainly full of slush.I decided to take this picture, but that's about when my friend started driving. So this picture is a little blurry in some places. You can still see the snowfall though (it's not as heavy).
