La Paz Baja California Sur, September 18,2007. The city of La Paz was shaken by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake yesterday morning at 2:02 am. After 18 days residents of La Paz were waken up with what is considered an aftershock of the 6.3 earthquake registered on Saturday September 1st. State authorities of Civil Protection believe it is almost imposible to have a major earthquake in the area. The frequent smaller quakes reduce the possibility of a major quake. Telluric movements are expected due to the continual slow movement of the tectonic plaques. The director of the State System for Civil Protection Jesus Gajon de la Toba informed that a very close follow up of the recent seismic activity has been kept and recommends residents of La Paz to stay calm and informed of protection measurements to be taken during a telluric movement. The State Unit of Civil Protection has been strengthening information programs and seismic risk prevention throughout massive communication means and training of staff and personnel in schools and other institutions. Today they were at Colegio Patria y Cultura teaching the children what to do and not to do during an earthquake situation during a drill with students and personnel.
