WestJet Reports drop in second-qaurter earnings
The Canadian transportation industry is already pathetic in both the services it offers and the prices it offers them at. A $400 ticket from Vancouver to Toronto...?!? With this quarters earnings report WestJet's future gets a little cloudy.
WestJet Airlines Ltd. recorded a 49 per cent drop in second-quarter earnings that were impacted by a $31.9 million writedown related to the development of a new computerized reservation system, a project that has since been mothballed. The Calgary-based low-cost airline said the writedown impacted earnings to the tune of $22.2 million after WestJet failed to reach an agreement with its partner in the aiRES system, Travelport Ltd.
Including the charge, WestJet said earnings for the quarter were $11.5 million, or 9 cents a share, compared to 22.4 million, or 17 cents a year earlier. Sales, meanwhile, increased 19 per cent to $504.8 million.
Executives however shrugged the loss off as an accounting thing. Yah, I've heard that before.
But WestJet executives focused on the operating results.“Excluding the impact of the non-cash aiRES write-down, our second quarter earnings from operations increased by over 58 per cent,” said Sean Durfy, the airline’s president and newly-minted CEO. He added during a conference call with analysts that an updated version of WestJet's current reservation system will allow the airline to achieve its strategic goals.

Twelve years ago a ticket to Toronto from Vancouver would've cost over $1000 and all you would get would be a terrible meal, some uninterested service and possibly on-time service. Things have improved quite a bit.

They've improved from twelve years ago, but 8 years ago this ticket would have cost only $200. Remember when Westjet first came out with $29 Calgary to Vancouver tickets? What happened to that? Why can cheap European carriers fly you to anywhere in Europe for $50 (inc. taxes) or less?

Let's see... rising fuel costs, increased expectations for perks on low airfares, and the kicker... population of Canada 33 million. Population of Europe 728 million. Maybe there's a bigger market for travel in Europe?

I think passengers have finally cottoned on to the fact that there's some price-fixing going on here: for example, tickets from Vancouver to Toronto have gone up 300% from last summer: Westjet's offerings for this weekend, for example are $962 for the cheap tix. Sure as the law of gravity, people stopped buying the tickets when they got too extortionate: only business and bereavement travelers will get on a short-haul coach-class flight for close to a grand. Similar to Ansett in Australia, Air Canada and Westjet (to a slightly lesser extent) know that they have a captive market for domestic travel, and their business model seems to be "make hay while the sun shines"; Virgin Blue steamed into the Australian market and snagged all the customers with lower fares, and look at Ansett now...

WestJet is great! I've been flying it all over the east coast and they're good.
