REYKJAVIK (AFP) - Iceland's decision earlier this week to resume commercial whaling despite an international ban has already hurt the country's tourism industry, with several whale watching companies reporting cancellations. As a person in a senior position in the New Zealand Tourist industry I am consciously making travellers aware of Iceland's stance on whaling. I make every effort to deter them from patronising any Icelandic business or visiting that country. It is an action which I am reluctant to take but Iceland is a far easier target than countries like Japan who, in turn, will begin to find its support base eroding as the smaller nations feel pain.


A lot of very nice people in Iceland are going to feel the bite and that is regretable but my answer is they have the option to pressure their wayward government - if they chose not to they only have themselves to blame as the World community begins a co-ordinated attack.


Unashamedly I will help lead any effort to target Iceland and other small nations supporting whaling.
