What Did You Do Today Johnny?

We are all so busy running from work, school, sports and extracurricular activities during the day that we just about fall over and collapse when we finally get home in the late afternoon or evening. Our family is no different. With girl scouts, soccer practice, meetings and traffic!, we all find ourselves at home, finally, exhausted.

But what's important here is that we carve out time for our family. No matter what time it is and no matter how long it takes. Even when we're tired and want to settle in for the night, if we don't communicate as a family, then all of our toil during the day is simply for monetary support but includes no emotional support. We need each other and need to hear from one another.

So, the next time you are all sitting down for a late night dinner (hopefully together); or gathering in a family room before going to sleep; or finding yourselves separated into various corners of the home doing homework or writing blog posts, remember to ask one another, before you sign off for the night, about their day. You will be amazed at the response you get when those little minds begin reflecting on all of the day's activities.

Now if you find a closed mouth, be weary of a closed heart. There is generally a lot more under the hood in these cases which may require further attention. But the general, "Oh it was good, Sally and I ..." response generally turns into a 10 minute dialogue. And this is just what you and your family need !

Also, remember to sit down together and write a note to a friend and ask them how they are doing. Personalized stationery is a good way of staying in touch with someone and allows you to share your feelings with words. The one who receives a personalized notecard will be very grateful for your thoughtfulness.
