NP Rank:
What is 'Kundalini'?
The Kundalini is a pool of energy that lies dormant at the base of the
spine and which can be and often is, accessed, allowing the
student/victim to use the energy for health, spirituality and creating
their life as they were meant to live it.
It's my belief that many people have had full or even partial
awakenings of their kundalini energy and honestly don't recognize it.
Many of these people go through life seemingly unaffected, some seek
higher spiritual planes and others suffer from epilepsy, schizophrenia
or worse.
Lately Kundalini has become a fad in certain parts of the metaphysical
community and in some ways has become the ultimate New Age ego trip,
although I feel that many of those folks are completely missing the
point.
A persons Kundalini can be awakened through an emotional trauma, a near
death experience, a sharp blow to the coccyx or purposefully through
meditation and study.
Those who seek to purposefully access their Kundalini can choose
several methods, including Kundalini Yoga (extremely safe and takes
upwards of 10-20 years to accomplish) and Hoshin Roshi Ryu (a "Martial
Art" form created to specifically awaken the kundalini through
meditation and physical training).
I don't believe that there is a 'wrong' or a 'right' way to awaken your
kundalini and there are benefits to most any path chosen.
In his book "Pathnotes of an American Ninja Master", Dr. Glenn Morris
goes into great detail about his Kundalini Awakening and the effects it
had (and still has) on his life, and in some of my other articles I
talk about my own experiences and some of the things I'm still learning
and experiencing. There are many exercises and experiments that one can
do to help awaken the kundalini and I'll write about some of those in
upcoming articles.

Calisto asked;
"I read your article about kundalini yoga. How does epilepsy relate to kundaluni
yoga? "
Hi Calisto,
The short answer is - It doesn't.
Let me explain.
My article wasn't about kundalini yoga, but about the kundalini itself, the pool of energy that you are learning to access with kundalini yoga. :)
Kundalini YOGA is an extremely safe and slow path to awakening the kundalini. A kundalini yoga practicioner is almost guaranteed NOT to suffer any of the more extreme side effects of kundalini awakening because it takes a long time time and a lot of practice. I'm a big fan of kundalini yoga and some of its offshoots.
On the other hand there are folks like me who experienced a SPONTANEOUS kundalini awakening during a near-death experience (in my case). This means that all the channels were blown open and it creates a situation where there can be HUGE shifts in conciousness, spirituality and other aspects of a persons life. That tends to be a lot for the average person to deal with. It can also overload ones physiology and cause them to experience a number of mental or emotional trauma as well. It took me the better part of a decade and a half to sort that out and I ended up with some side effects like prematurely grey hair and some burnt organs in the process.
I firmly believe that the kundalini awakening is FAR more common in Western culture than most people would think, but that we simply don't have the tools or terminology in our culture to deal with it. I KNOW that there are people on Prozac and other drugs who could benefit from a long term course in kundalini yoga to help get those energies under control.
This is a very short answer to a very complicated question, so let me know if it helps.
Love and Blessings,
Robert :)
