A half hour after this picture was taken, I got into a lot of trouble. For once, I was under the speed limit and that did not help. There was an immigration checkpoint on the interstate in the middle of nowhere. The immigration officer started talking to me.IO: Are you a US Citizen?Me: NoIO: Where are your papers?Me: What papers?IO: Your Visa and all that.Me: Oh, its at home in Florida.IO: Where are you coming from?Me: Florida.IO: Where are you going?Me: CaliforniaNow you have to understand, till this point, anyone who had asked us that had this to say. "OMG you are driving all the way from Florida to California", with a smile on their faces. His reaction was a little different.IO: You are driving all the way from Florida to California... WITHOUT PAPERS?Me: Silent.IO: How are you going back.Me: FlyingIO: They are going to ask you for your papers there.Me: They never have in the past 5 years, I do not think it is going to change. And that pissed him off.IO: You know at this point, I could confiscate your car and send you back to... Where are you from?Me: IndiaIO: Yeah India and I do not know on how you travel without....Went on for another 20 mts. I sat there listening. The weird part was that there were two other people in the car and he was not talking to them, not one word. The line behind us got bigger and bigger and he did not bother checking my ID card or my business cards. I think he figured that if we were illegal, I would not be having a conversation with him. Besides he did not know that the person on the passenger side seat worked for the department at work that handles immigration work, so I was not worried.
