Who are we? Remerks from the West EU
Some months ago, I was in Palermo, the capital of the island of Sicily in the extreme south of Italy:here the historical Arabian culture is magnificent and it appear as a beautiful yemeni landscape for its gold shapes of architecture and its multicultural attitude where a lots of muslims community and immigrates from Maghreb are present.
"I'm depressed, here I’m incapable to feel the european mood: I want to emigrate in Florence or in Milan because I want to be European" said to me Raffaele (22 y.o), a young journalist and student that live here. This is a sentence that every time impress me and make me think to the European value in our coscience. What does it mean to feel the European mood? And what will change if he goes on the north Italy? Never will change, he will feel the Italians reality as in Sicily also if is true that for the long story of invasions, in Italy from region to region many use and traditions are different. But this is another story… I live in West Europe, in Italy and often I ask to my abroad web friend show they think about the role of my nation and EU to their eyes. Many times they ask to me that the West of this community is considerated as a geopolitical organisation with one of the most good welfare in the world and without wars. But how fell us in this condition, so many times we are blind in front of the importance of a peacefull union because we always have had it: the reality of war is too distant from our habitants exept for old people.Infact, here in the West of the community, physically, wars are finish here since the end of the II World War. Always the national identity is more strong than the union of EU, and an “Europrean”(a rare word to pronounce) always said “ I’m Italian, or French or German and so on” and this show that the US idea of identity are different to us and we should stop to copy other models.
It’s also true that in Tv and other mass media, story dedicate rarely information about the EU that often seems to be only a exercise of political engagement between leaders.
As citizen and as journalist free lance and blogger, I really don’t ear nothing about other European reality exept for general charts about nations status in instruction, technological levels and economy: here media always speak about Middle East affairs and national ones that I’m capable to analyze more than EU situation that is always linked with burocracy and never with anthropology between other EU members. I’m not and I would not feel me as a pessimist, but it’s true that sometimes Europe seems “the dream of a thing”, a utopian real politik.
I realize that we only feel Europe when we leave its borders: coming out from the Euroland and Schengen zone obligate us to exchange money and use passaport: so, for discover our identity we have to feel the contrasts, it’s a pleasure that only a great European traveller can feel on himself.
Anyway,in general, we can admit that Europe hasn’t still create an autonomy identity: an article of the philosopher Slavoj Zizek on the british newspaper The Drawbridge said that we have to set us free from Chinese capitalism that damages European trade and American capitalism that always stressed European aspect in diplomatic affairs as Road Map and we risk to become also a big site of nostalgic tourism.
How is the perception of EU reality for people?
Here we always speak about the opposition of France to a Costituition text and the possibility of the entry of Turkey in EU, while some important member of the religion communities express their will to have an Europe based on Christian value in opposition with laic parties. And what about East EU? Perhaps for some state as Bulgaria and Romania it was too soon for joing in the community, a lots of European values are still not very strong for them always if European leaders seems to have start to run and run for a frantic process of grow of our union increased financial helps and public infrastructures for a better communications between states.
We have to learn to look at us in a mirror and know who we are.

Groudy.Blue, this is Good Stuff. I think it's a universal human phenomenon that it's not until we leave our homes and visit other places that we actually appreciate where we came from. My aunt often says that the best vacation is the one where you're excited to come home. This piece is a wonderful insight into the European psychie.
