Here is a rough breakdown of who gets what when you fill up at the gas station:

  • 45% due to actual crude oil cost.
  • 35% to various governments taxes
  • 15% to the refiners
  • 5% to the gas station or retailer

Yikes. So, basically, according to those stats, an ideal situation for the government would be a fuel price that is at the very upper limit of what the middle class could afford.
