WHO PUT THE "CULT" IN "CULTURE"? On Andrew Keen and Over Thinking One's Own Limitations

My response to Andrew Keen, and his new book: The Cult of the Amateur: How today's Internet is killing our culture  book which trashes “Western” (American) Culture from a wholly British, elitist perspective, and has the balls to suggest that WE might share any aspect of culture, a culture our people FLED FROM a few centuries ago, is not a positive one.

This is not, in the way of the British, tactful nor respectful of the ruling class (should such a class actually exist other than the self appointed few).  First of all, who’s “Culture” is he referring to?  Is he  making the MISTAKEN assumption that I am of British Culture? He has little ability to perceive culture from my perspective. Quite narcissistic of him believe he can.   He is the living proof of the enemy of which he speaks. His book, should anyone be stupid enough to take it seriously, is exactly what he speaks of, talk about a pot calling a kettle "black",  or in this case should I say well,  he's a bloody hypocrite!

“YOU” don’t have to have any TALENT nor SKILLS to write a book which is CONTROVERSIAL in NATURE and to CAPITALIZE on WEB 2.0, or WHATEVER WAVE YOU CAN JUMP ON, (hence the other BRIT who is behind “American IDOL”, talk about exploitation, capitalism and greed!)

“We need the middle men, the “Experts”", he says. The problem with that is that these “experts” are nothing more than self appointed “experts”, like himself, who manage to gain a marketable voice.

“Talent is scare, whether one likes it or not…. ” he says; ….finding and distributing a talent. That ‘ecosystem’ is not an algorithm, …that ecosystem is human…  the only really valuable way of discovering and ‘polishing up’ and distributing and selling talent, is human talent….” he rambles on during his Google presentation.

Can someone explain this to me? I thought the goal of the “MEDIA” was either to INFORM AND ENTERTAIN, OR EDUCATE THE PEOPLE” or to EXPLOIT AND PERSUADE THE PEOPLE, which is exactly his goal with this book is it not?

One fatal flaw with these neo ideas is that Mr. Keen simply has failed to define highly subjective and qualitative terms like “Talent” for one, and has glossed over meaning with  language worthy of Madison Avenue.   In a sense, Mr. Keen is saying that Americans (as I take it) are too stupid to recognize or even have enough “talent”, and then, once having found it, are not able to “polish up” talent.

I would like to  ask Mr. Keen a question.  Don't your realzie that culture is much deeper than merely "language"?

Do you understand that MY PERSPICTIVE OF YOU IS:
(and I am sorry to any of my British Friends)

Religious and Patriarchal oppression,
Elitist values and very high self opinions,

I won’t go on about the idea of a QUEEN BUT HELLO? I SCOFF AND LAUGH at YOUR QUEEN!

I have no respect for a QUEEN OR KING IN A GOVERNMENTAL POSITION!

This is a RULING CLASS mentality which I, as an AMERICAN DO NOT SHARE.

As for talent,  well yes,  there is the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra but my memories of successful Brits are more in the likings of Mr. Johnny Rotten, so please don’t rely on anyone in the American Media to EDUCATE ME.   At the  beginning, it has more to do with WHERE I CHOOSE TO LOOK, from the CHOICES I am GIVEN.

Mr. Keen continues to harp on Wikipedia. He insists that Americans are TOO STUPID to KNOW that the SOURCE on WIKIPIDEA is not RELIABLE.   It is up to American TEACHERS AND PARENTS AND OTHER AMERICANS TO SIMPLY TELL THE CHILD AND PROBLEM SOLVED.   You must find the TRUE SOURCE of any idea.   Not a difficult idea.   You can teach critical thinking skills,  and agreeably Americans should turn off the TV’s and practice this in a more aware fashion but oh yea..

...I forgot to mention SPAM and MONTY PYTHON’s FLYING CIRCUS?

This is what American Media Gave me. UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS was ripe with dry British humor and I could not find myself sitting through an entire episode.

...Of course this all my personal opinion, and if I had the right contacts and the Elitist EGO to think I could make a few bucks by publishing MY OPINION, I just might try it,  I have nothing against earning a living, but  lets call a spade a "spade" and come on down off our high horse.  The best way Mr. Keen can help improve the "culture",  any culture,  is by researching Narcissistic Personality Disorder and buying a good mirror!

Mr. Keen, I agree that 75 percent of US Americans are Functional Idiots, HOWEVER,  WE ARE FUNCTIONAL IDIOTS  BY FREEDOM OF CHOICE, agreeably a sad choice for those who make it, but do not imply that we are so "MONKEY" like that we cannot CHOOSE to LEARN, TO PURSUE TALENT, TO DEFY ALL OF YOUR SNOBBISH IDEAS COMPLETELY AND LOOK PEOPLE LIKE YOU IN THE FACE AND LAUGH.

MR. KEEN, Please SPEAK FOR YOURSELF.
YOU SPEAK FOR BRITS
NOT FOR US.

Signed Me an UNDER “EDUCATED” AMERICAN.

Mr. Keen is nothing more than a hypocrite who is trying to get rich off of a rather controversial and novel idea, that no intelligent person would accept or buy into.  I recommend sending this book back to the United Kingdom, as it is written for them.

phillipnyc, this is clearly an opinion piece; I'd recommend changing the category of the posting to reflect that.

You are certainly right.  Done.  I didn't take care to examine all of the choices for categories before making a hasty one.  Thanks to the power of this feedback information is improved.   Amature and self moderation in action! Thank you!
