A swimmer off an Australian island was rescued by his wife after being attacked by a huge saltwater crocodile, a report says. The Times of London said the crocodile clamped its jaws around the head and shoulders of the swimmer, police Sgt. Jeff Tanswell of Thursday Island, and pulled him underwater as he snorkeled near an ocean reef.
The croc and Tanswell then surfaced and Tanswell managed to free himself, The Times said.
But the officer was still in danger. Tanswell's wife Jane, also a police officer, got their boat between her injured husband and the 10-foot crocodile, and pulled him to safety.
Tanswell was treated by a medic on a police launch and then taken to a Thursday Island hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening, The Times said.
Thursday Island, Queensland, is in the Torres Strait between northern Australia and Papua New Guinea.
