Note that the same can happen here. Wikipedia and NowPublic are very similar; they are both crowd-powered media, where everybody participates in generating information which is then available to the world at no charge. When you point out that somebody can post something inaccurate on Wikipedia, remember that the same applies equally about NowPublic.
But how many people can rewrite or delete an inaccurate story on Wikipedia? By comparison, how many people can rewrite or delete an innacurate story on the New York Times?
Peer review is awesome. But you have to recognize that it's not instantaneous.

The advantage of the wiki model is faster and more complete coverage. The disadvantage is that, for any given article to be vetted, someone else has to look at it; furthermore, that someone else has to know as much as or more than the original poster about that topic. This is no problem for common subjects, but for topics without too many experts, it can be awhile before someone comes along and lets us know that Saturn's sixth moon doesn't have a lake of Cheez-Wiz. That's why we have editors here, scouring the site and using what tools are available to encourage updates, seek corrections, or, my favorite, bust spam punks.
With news, though, we also can get a different view of events than is put forward by MSM, which sometimes has its own agenda. For example, our very own selectroclash witnessed an MSM-worthy event the other week, and his take is different than that of the NY Times, and 'clash has no reason to make stuff up.
Also, Boston, you are free to add some of your own commentary, or
let us know who it was who supposedly died in the headline. But, again,
nice find.
