NP Rank:
Will HDTV destroy Canada? will you buy one for Christmas?
You may be considering buying a new flat-panel TV set for Christmas. But before you do, a warning: it may be bad for Canada.
Of course, you may not care about Canadians. But if some part of your soul is deeply concerned about it, you'll want to consider the following.
All of a sudden, HDTV - or high definition television for those who are not yet considering buying one - is a threat to Canadian culture, according to two U. of Alberta pipepuffers. And as if the excitement could not be any greater for denizens of the Great White North, the head of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.says that HDTV is a loser.
âThere's no evidence either in Canada or the United States that we have
found for advertisers willing to pay a premium for a program that's in
HD,â Mr. Rabinovich said. âSo basically they're saying if you want to
shoot in HD, that's your business, we're not going to pay you more.â
The above is quote is from the Globe and Mail. Below, the original article upon which this story is based:
a couple of Canadian professors are warning of the threat the conversion to digital TV poses to "Canada's cultural sovereignty". In their book Canadian Television Today they address what they see as a problem for broadcasters forced to keep pace with the U.S.'s scheduled switch. Canada has not yet set a date to change exclusively to digital broadcasting, and the two University of Calgary professors don't seem to see why its necessary anytime soon given the great expense such a move puts on smaller local stations.

I don't think HDTV will destroy Canada or USA. Regardless of the number of HDTV channels and movies the sales of LCD HDTV has gone up in the year 2008, with the 52 Inch Samsung HDTV being the best seller. I guess most of the customers are using the high def TV for games and that could be the reason why eco friendly Philips LCD HDTV is really popular which got a very good rating from Cnet

I think its inevitable that hdtv will become the standard for everything home entertainment. Add the quality of picture to constantly lowered prices and its really a no brainer. People also like the wall units and entertainment centers that usually accompany the flat screen sets.
There is a very strong positive correlation between the sales of tv furniture and particularly modern wall units and the sale of flat screen hdtvs.
