Will Smith was in New York's Washington Square Park filming yet another vampire movie called, "I am Legend". The film supposedly takes place in Los Angeles but they have been in New York City filming for weeks now. The film crew completely took over Washington Square Park, no foot traffic allowed - pissing off NYU students and local residents who've lost their hang out.
I wandered by the set the other day but no big Willy - according to one self-important PA Willy was gettin jiggy at a hotel "somewhere on Fifth Avenue" and wasn't due for a while. The crew was filming some secene in the empty park involving a series of bright lights which turned off in sequence in a circle around the park. Honestly not very exciting... looks like 2nd unit type stuff - maybe some cgi work is planned or it was a background plate of some sort?? no one on set was willing to dish information.
According to IMDB the movie, directed by Francis Lawrence and due to be released in 2007: is about
Robert Neville... the last man alive. In Los Angeles, he busies himself with preparing for a nightly attack from the rest of the world - all of which have transformed into blood-thirsty vampires.
Apparently the film
was originally going to be made in the 1990s with Arnold Schwarzenegger starring and Ridley Scott directing. The budget became too expensive and they both left the project to pursue other projects.
... I don't think i can sit through another vampire movie, maybe they should abandon it again...
there have been big Willie sightings and film crews all over Manhattan... 53rd and 7th, near the Sheradon, 46th street between 9th and 10th, around Madison Sq. Park, etc. If you have an IMDB login you can follow the action (and find out where they're shooting next): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480249/board/nest/54310653
