Will The Price of Hoodia Diet Pills Be Coming Down This Year?

Ever since hoodia diet pills were available on a mass scale in 2004, the demand for hoodia gordonii has always outpaced supply. The end result has been skyrocketing prices with no relief in site - until maybe this year.

In a recent article I wrote about the price of hoodia and how it might be coming down this year with the help from a South African company called, Afriplex. They planted 12 million hoodia gordonii plants and its first harvest in April 2007 is expected to yield 80 dry tons of hoodia gordonii.

To put these numbers in perspective, there were 60 tons of wild harvested hoodia gordonii exported from South Africa in 2006. A harvest yielding 80 dry tons this year alone will significantly increase the amount of material available and should help combat rising prices on raw hoodia gordonii.

There may also be relief coming this year from the country of Namibia. Hoodia grows naturally and legally in only a few countries including Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. However, the only market that has been open to buyers and exporters is South Africa - until later this year when the Namibia hoodia market will be opening. This added supply, along with the supply from Afriplex, will definitely help meet the rising demand of hoodia.

This is great news for hoodia sellers and should be great news for consumers as well. Only time will tell if the price of raw hoodia does indeed come down and if the decrease in price translates into a drop in the retail prices of hoodia diet pills.

So far I haven't seen any movement in the price of hoodia diet pills but it's a little too early to tell. The Afriplex supply won't be available until next month and Namibia's market won't be open until later this year. However, these two additional sources of hoodia gordonii are significant enough that there may be a possibility that the price of hoodia diet pills will come down eventually. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
