If your Thanksgiving holiday is spent pouring over travel brochures
in preparation of packing your swimsuit for a winter getaway, how about
leaving the tanning oil in the medicine cabinet and polishing up the
chain mail instead?

While
many are booking their winter getaways to exotic locations such as
Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Virgin Islands; a few are
preparing for a journey back through time. A trip to the middle ages,
to be exact, via one of the mid-winter Renaissance Faires being offered
this season. (And, with one, you may want to bring the tanning oil
along with the chain mail!)

Many
are familiar with at least one of the over 188 Renaissance Faires that
occur throughout the country. (If you’re not, you’re missing out on a
grand adventure to the past where Kings and Queens ruled and chivalry
was in vogue.) While most of these festivals occur during summer and
autumn, a few are rooted in the winter months and give winter weary
individuals a chance to get out and mingle with the regalia of the
King’s court.

  • Louisiana offers the Louisiana Renaissance Festival from November 4th through December 10th.
  • Florida offers three festivals, with the Pirates In Paradise in
late November/early December; the Kiwanis Lee County Medieval Faire in
January; and the Bay Area Festival in February.
  • Texas offers the Ingleside Renaissance Faire in December. Oklahoma offers the Scarlet-fest in January.
  • California offers a one day 12th Night Feast and Mid Winter
Renaissance Revel on January, 13th, 2007 that recreates the renaissance
    12th Night Holiday.
  • Lastly, the Michigan Renaissance Festival along with Mid-America
Festivals takes the middle ages to the high seas with their first
    Renaissance cruise in January.

More later…
