Wirtland  ['v¡rtlənd] is the first virtual country  (www.wirtland.com). Wirtland is an experiment into self-sustainability and legitimacy of a country without its own soil.   Wirtland claims to be the youngest country in the world and was founded on August 14, 2008. An extract from Wirtland's Statute follows:

"

"While the boundaries of sovereign states are becoming symbolic in Europe, in other world's regions sovereignty is being increasingly challenged, and separatism sometimes leads to bloodshed and terrorism. While these trends are contrasting, they both suggest for a serious rethinking of the notion of self-identification in a changing world. For an individual, who is not actively involved in political life, there are too few options for self-identification. We believe people should be offered a broader choice.

" "

Wirtland is the newest alternative for people's self-identification. Most importantly, Wirtland is a democratic, friendly, and peaceful alternative.

When Wirtland will become a real country? It depends on the Wirtlanders and their will to contribute to its development (just like in any other democratic community).  Our aim is to offer a working mechanism to allow for free discussions and all kinds of activities for our citizens and other interested people.

Who can apply for becoming a Wirtlander? Everyone".

" ""

Q: Would you explain to me the purpose(s) of Wirtland are? By that I mean specific activities "citizens" may engage in. How does it differ from a traditional web site such as forum?   A: For instance, once you're a citizen you can vote, be nominated for a public position, or choose whatever you want to do. One of our supporters suggested being an Ambassador.  Wirtland is full of vacancies. Become a writer, an entrepreneur, you name it. Make music. But not war. Remember Wirtland was born during Georgian conflict, and we just hate war.

The differenece from a traditional website is a higher level of self-identification, a closer kind of community. Everyone can chat in a forum, but if you have applied for a passport, it's a serious decision, a statement of sorts.
Citizens and non-residents (aka "tourists") of Wirtland have recently formed a social network at http://witizens.ning.com

About Witizen

I assist in building the community of citizens of Wirtland, the first experimental virtual country (www.Wirtland.com). Wirtland is not a computer game, or a "chat" network. We aim at building working communities, which will offer poitical and economic benefits, generate new employment opportunities and income, provide for new source of artistic creativity and independent opinion-sharing.
