Parking wardens handed out more than £1.1m in parking fines last year across Northamptonshire UK, but the overall service still made a loss, new figures revealed.

A report still to be published by Northamptonshire County Council will show that in the financial year to last April, a total of £1,146,495 was successfully collected in parking fines with a further £503,691 recouped from pay and display parking machines in Northampton, the only district in the county to operate them.

Despite there being a vacancy rate of 15 per cent in retail outlets, with 68 of Northampton  town centre’s 465 shops standing empty. ~

Councillor Tony Ansell (Con, Abington) told the meeting held to discuss its retail future, that since evening parking charges were introduced in May 2012, 275 parking fines has been handed out at the nearby Market Street car park and 97 at the Melbourne Street car park.

Raj Miah, of the Maharaja restaurant, said he had lost a third of his business since the charges were introduced.

He said: “It is deterring people from coming into the area. Other town centres are not charging for parking in the evenings. We are paying about £11,000 a year in business rates and for that we get nothing.

Councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Rectory Farm) said: “Councillor Ansell has made me aware of the issue. We are going to review it and do what we can.
