Update: Death Toll Rises to 21

21 passengers were killed and around 17 injured when the driver of the Delhi-bound Goa Express apparently ignored signal and rammed into the last coach of the stationary Mewar Express near here early on Wednesday.

Rescuers recovered 19 bodies during a rescue operation that lasted nearly seven hours, said Rajesh Dikshit, a police spokesman. Two of the 19 injured people died in hospital, Dikshit said.

The unreserved compartment, which was a second class-cum-luggage rake at the end of the train, bore the brunt of the accident that occurred between Mathura and Vrindavan. The pantry car of the Goa Express was also damaged. The guard of the Mewar Express and two staff members of the pantry car were among the dead.

"Bodies of 13 passengers have been shifted to two hospitals in the city," District Magistrate Dinesh Chandra Shukla said.
