A shooting incident has occurred at a school in western Finland, the country's national broadcaster reports.

Police ordered students Tuesday to evacuate a trade school in western Finland after a student opened fire with a gun, reports said. It was not immediately known if any students or staff were injured. There were some 200 students in the building at the trade school in Kauhajoki, western Finland where the shooting was reported, public broadcaster YLE said.

In November 2007, a Finnish high school student killed eight people in a school shooting before killing himself.

The November shooting at Jokela, 60 kilometres north of Helsinki, triggered a series of threats against schools in Finland and its Nordic neighbours.

School's web pages: Kauhajoki School of Hospitality

At the moment it is difficult to get information and confirm it as most of the web sites are acting slowly. Police will report more in 40 minutes.

There has also been information, that school's name is college for home-and institutional economics in Kauhajoki.

All my grandparents came from Finland and I have such sorrow to hear of this shooting.  We have had so much of this in the U.S.

and now in Finland.  These are difficult times for everyone in this world.  The world's financial system is in crisis, thanks in great part

to the greed in the financial community.  I suspect that some people suffer from a lack of hope, and think there is no future.  If there is

mental illness involved then you wind up with a catastrophe like this.  Everyone needs to go back to the basics.  Family, self-respect

and the respect for others.  Difficult times make a person stronger.  People need to pull together in difficult times, and always

for that matter.  I am personally sick of all the divisions amongst people.  In the U.S., the political systems breeds divisions. The ruling

elite, after all, wish to keep us divided.  In that way we are manageable! Time to think about how we can all change the future, and

really get involved in doing so.

Now the latest report filed by news agency Reuters has confirmed death of several students in the shootout.

A male student shot dead several people at a vocational school in western Finland on Tuesday before killing himself, local authorities said.

The gunman, a student at the local school in the town of Kauhajoki, was shooting inside the building for some time before he shot himself, police said.

"He is no longer free. He has killed himself," Kauhajoki Mayor Antti Rantakokko told Reuters.

"Several are dead," said Rantakokko, adding he did not know the exact number. "The situation is over now."

Rescue personnel around the school had been unable to help while the student was still firing in the building, said rescue squad coordinator Kari Saarinen, chief physician at Senajoki Hospital, about 60 kms from Kauhajoki.

He said hospitals in the area were on full emergency alert. He added that he was unsure about the number of victims, but believed there were several -- some wounded, some dead.

According to Helsingin Sanomat-newspaper website, the shooter isn't dead, but treated at Tampere University Hospital. This is bad news... I have a lot of relatives in Kauhajoki. :(

Pasi, I like this story. It is quite discomforting for me to say that violent stories should be marked as good stuff.

But what I admire is your concern for sharing this timely story immediately as it should be.

Apparently there were two persons involved, a girlfriend too with the name tag LOVEHETAR. The person's name might be Matti Saari, "Mr. Saari", that's at least everywhere tagged in youtube etc..

Hey,

thanks for a good article but you might want to correct the typo in the beginning to avoid unintentional hilarity. I'm sure the shooter didn't have an insurance but was injured instead. Beside the point, i know, but would increase your credibility..
