On August 29th, 2008   Six member of CSAPA "China Small Animal Protection Association" found a truck carried 73 wooden box with around 1400 cats were ready to send to Guangzhou to served as food.

One of the member attempt to dispute with the driver, hopefully to stop this tragedy. The drivers deny their act at the beginning, after negotiate with the CSAPA member, they admit that they were sending the cats to served as food. Drivers said they were from a small town in Jiangsu, there are over 10,000 cats trade daily, each kilogram can earn for about $4 - $5 CNY. Furthermore, cats were send to Guandzhou and Hainan for two to three times a week.

Ms. Tsang a member of CSAPA with other 5 member, request to the driver that they are willing to buy all the cats, but the driver refuse with their idea. When the police arrive at the cats market, they told the CSAPA that due to lack of evidence, there is nothing they could do.

April Mon, thank you for this sad story. What happened to these cats - did they end up at the market?

If 10,000 cats are traded daily from one town, that is an awful lot of felines that are being used for food. Is this happening all over China?

Indeed, these kind of problem have been happening at China for previous years. There is no one could do anything about it. Even as a chinese myself, I really could not stand those people that eats cats and dogs. Shame on them!

As the local HK newspaper reporter mention, there are about 70 cages fill with cats are lying around the cats market. Some of there were unable to resist with the heat, and die inside the cage before it was deliver to other destination!

I wrote this was hoping to draw international press attention, hopefully someone powerful could stand up to stop this tragedy.

Terribly terribly sad.... Why do we continue to trade with China when such cruelty exists?

Don't We eat Pork and Veal, Beef, Lamb and Chicken and well as Fish, Deer and so on?

Where I grow up we ate Rats, Cats, Dogs, Sheep ...… Most people eat what is available and because they cannot afford T bone steaks nor Great Rice boles or Vegetables. They will eat what is eatable. Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe as well as South America are not as spoiled as North American and West European are. Do not judge what you cannot understand. In North America until the second World War People eat Squirrels, Pigeons, And yes Other things as well that today not one would even think of eating.

I am all for animal protection and animal right, however do not judge the hungry for eating insects, Cats, and so on. At least not until you your self hat to be Hungry and no could not afford nor get any food other then the Rat or Cat. Trust me you will eat the cat.

April Mon, very good story, yes it is sad to think that this happens. I have to agree with Paschen though, people here in North America have in ways rather fortunate. We are dainty eaters and lucky to have a varity of things to eat. Many in the world are not so blessed, we also should not judge others by our thoughts and standards. I am a cat lover and am sadden every time I see stories and wish it was not so. Maybe things like this well olny be a footnote in history, but I don't think so for a very long time

How is a cat different from a pig?  Are you not taking a life to feed yourself?  Does it make it more "civilized" to have a butcher do the dirty work for you?

People are still eating squirrel and ground hog in the mid-west.  I'll bet you didn't know that a ground hog is all white meat....

people are still hunting deer, antelope, caribou, salmon, ground hog, squirrel, possum, and whatever else they can fit in a stew pot....duck, quail, goose, turkey....

It's all more healthy than the powdered milk....no?

Cats and dogs TRUST their owners and know they are dependent on them.  To kill them is an act of betrayal.  Wildlife (I don't hunt and don't condone hunting) have enough instinct to be wary of humans and avoid them if possible.  Many rich North Americans CHOOSE vegeterianism because it is more noble not to kill and also for health reasons.  If the rich are happy with plant life, then the poor can be too.  All that aside, cats are boiled alive in China and Korea.  This practice only highlights an uncaring spirit in those people.  Many meat consuming nations have laws governing how an animal is to be slaughtered with the intent of humane slaughtering, any slaughtered animal deserves such consideration.

Oh -well - here in the USA cats are being made to suffer for profit. Most die of cancers, and other sicknesses. A lot has to do with the awful packaged food their unsuspecting owners buy them. Purina recently even went as far as patenting a small health food's company's invention to try and extort tax money from all its healthier competitors -while not using that invention themselves.
