NP Rank:
15 dead in China coal mine accident
This is not the single such story from the dark and deep mines of China, we hear such kind of mine blast on regular basis. Why chines are so unsafe to work.Even death toll is not the true picture of the reality. The much reguated chinese media dont have the liberty to investigate such story in detail, we can simply predict and pray.
Fifteen workers died after an explosion at a coal mine in northeast China, state media reported on Monday.
The blast occurred on Sunday afternoon at a legally run mine in Qitaihe city, Heilongjiang province, according to the Xinhua news agency, which said the cause of the accident was still being investigated.
Twenty-five workers were in the mine when the explosion happened, with 10 managing to escape. The bodies of the 15 killed were recovered on Monday.
Nearly 3,800 people died in Chinese coal mines last year, according to official figures. However, independent monitors say the real figure is much higher as many accidents are covered up.

Important post. While it is outrageous to the rest of us in other countries that this occurs so frequently in China, I guess it must be very difficult to improve the safely of all the mines very quickly. China is now much more sensitive to safety issues and other countries are working them. There is an interesting article in Foreign in June/July from The US treasury Secretary of state, describing the us's involvement with top level officials.

Thanks for comment gerry, the chinese labour laws and safety norms are veri strict but the death toll says something else. The input of technology is big issue and related cost advantage.
