New Delhi: 17th Nationan Science Congress held in Gujarat city Ahemdabad. More than 700 young scientists from across the country are expected to participate in 17th National Children Science Congress (NCSC),being organised for the first time in the state at Ahmedabad. The five day event will begin on December 27. As many as 100 child scientists, along with their escorting teachers from SAARC countries, will also participate in the 17th NCSC. In all, around 50,000 students are expected to take part in various programs at the event. All the activities during the prestigious scientific program will revolve around theme of Planet Earth Our Home, Explore, Care and Share'. Vice-president of India, Mohammad Hamid Ansari will inaugurate the Science Congress and state chief minister, Narendra Modi will be chief guest. Giving an outline of this program on Wednesday, minister of women and child welfare, Anandiben Patel, said, "The NCSC will give a platform to budding scientists in the age group of 10-17 years." She pointed that idea was to encourage children to visualize future of the nation and help them in growing as sensitive and responsible citizens. "We aim to have more Kalams and Sarabhais by stimulating scientific temperament of students," she said. Highlighting the scientific component of the program, Ravi Saxena, principal secretary, department of science & technology, government of Gujarat, said, " The event will enable the participants to ponder about significant societal problem, ponder over its cause and subsequently try to solve the problem by using the scientific process." He said , "We are already on the path of progress as from 35,000 students opting for science five years back, number has gone up to 1.15 lakh." The event is being hosted by Gujarat Council of Science City, Gujarat department of science and technology, along with SGVP International School, in support with National Council For Science for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) of department of science & technology, government of India.

National Children's Science Congress (NCSC) provides the children of 10 to 17 years from all over the country an unique opportunity to use their scientific temperament and knowledge to make their own dreams come true. The program was initiated in 1993, with the following objectives.

  • To provide a forum to the young scientists to pursue their natural curiosity and to quench their thirst for creativity by experimenting on open-ended problems;
  • To make you feel that science is all around and you can gain knowledge as well as solve many problems also be relating the learning process to the physical and social environment of the neighbourhood;
  • To encourage children throughout the country to visualise future of the nation and help building generation of sensitive, responsible citizens;
  • To stimulate scientific temperament and learning the scientific methodology for observation, collection of data, experiment analysis arriving at conclusions and presenting the findings.

NCSC is held annually from December 27-31. After a thorough scrutiny at district and state levels, about 500 children take part in this five day long deliberations and fun-filled science activitie.

Objectives

Dissemination and exchange of S&T communication information, experience and materials, between and among members and among common people with the primary aim of generating scientific temper among masses. 

Training of S&T communicators / workers for a variety of S&T popularisation tasks.

Nucleation of activities and agencies for 'Science Popularisation' in States / Union Territories, districts, blocks, villages etc.

Preparation of software items and their conversion into all major Indian languages and its distribution and dissemination countrywide.

Participation in surveys, data collection, analysis and to undertake research projects in the area of science/technology communication and popularisation.

To undertake research, design, development and production work concerning materials, intruments or equipments which may be helpful in promoting science and indigenous knowledge systems/technology.

To undertake and/or participate in programmes which may bring benefits of science and technology to various sections of common people in terms of their quality of life and their environment.
