18th Anniversary of Death of Former Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi
Eighteen years ago Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, was campaigning in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu for an election rally in Sriperumbudur.
He was the youngest Prime Minister of the country. In his address to the joint session of the US congress, he quoted Martin Luther King and said, "I am young and I too have a dream. He was the first face of the young India.
In Sriperumbudur, a female Liberation Tigers Tamil Eelam suicide bomber was ready to strike, with very little security that was later acknowledged as a security blunder. Rajiv Gandhi died that night. Prabhakaran had issued the attack command. w
Rajiv is the second member of the Gandhi family to be assassinated, Indira Gandhi had also been killed in this manner.
In a striking similarity to the assassination of Mahatama Gandhi (the two share the surname but are not related), Rajiv Gandhi's assassin also bent down to touch his feet and then blew herself up. Mahatama Gandhi's assassin touched his feet before firing bullets into his body.
The nation on Thursday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 18th death anniversary. President Pratibha Patil, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the departed leader's widow and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi were among the first to pay floral tributes to the late leader at 'Veer Bhumi', the memorial of Gandhi.
