District officials said Thursday that a Paradise Valley Community College professor will be terminated for having an "inappropriate relationship" with a now-deceased student.

Andria Ziegler, 19, was laid to rest after she was found comatose on the floor of her professor's home on April 20th.

A letter from Chancellor Rufus Glasper to Todd accuses him of violating the district's policies on "amorous relationships" and says he "violated professional standards that MCCCD has a right to expect of its faculty to uphold."

Phoenix police aren't calling the case a homicide.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Here is the Story of a 51 year old psychology professor who was coaxing his 19 year old student to date him.  But when paramedics came to the house after she fell comatose, he said he didn't know her name, as he picked her up off of the street.  She was called a Jone Doe for a couple of days.  The professor called his lawyer but didn't seem to have time to cal the girls parents.

We are not talking about these large universities here where the professor never learns the students name.  He had been her professor for a year, knew her well, had been after her to go out with him.  How's that for professional ethics.  Thankfully he will not be teaching as he is on leave.

PHOENIX -- The parents of a college student who died at the home of her professor last weekend said their daughter was dead for two days before they found out.

Though a cause of death has not yet been determined, investigators said Andria Ziegler, 19, may have died of a drug overdose at the north Phoenix condo of her Paradise Valley Community College psychology professor, 51-year-old Michael Todd.

Ziegler's parents said the drugs would not have been her idea.

"He coaxed her into seeing him after she said she didn't want to, and I could see that he would try to coax her into something else," said Kimberly McManus, Ziegler's mother.

Student found comatose in professor’s home

Phoenix police are investigating the death of a Paradise Valley Community College student who was found by paramedics in a comatose state inside her psychology professor’s condominium on Sunday.

Andria Ziegler, 19, was pronounced dead at John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Beardsley Medical Center about 3 a.m., 30 minutes after she was found in the north Phoenix residence of Michael Todd, according to authorities.

Todd, 51, who has taught at Paradise Valley Community College since 2000, was placed on paid administrative leave on Tuesday, soon after Ziegler’s parents called college administrators to report their daughter’s death, according to Joan Westlake, spokeswoman for Paradise Valley Community College.

The Phoenix Fire Department first responded to Todd’s residence near Seventh Street and Bell Road about 2:34 a.m. Sunday, on a 911 call of an unconscious female, according to information from the Phoenix Fire Department.

Ziegler’s death is not being investigated as a homicide, and no suspects are being sought in connection to her death, according to Phoenix Police Detective Stacie Derge.

“We are investigating this as an unknown death and we are not searching for any suspects at this time,” Derge said.

The cause of Ziegler’s death has not been determined, and toxicology results are pending, according to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Ziegler’s parents had notified authorities about 4:17 p.m. on Monday to report her missing, and started circulating fliers with her picture on them, Derge said.

Phoenix police then got involved after they became aware of an unidentified woman’s body at the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office and connected them, according to Derge.

Todd had called in sick to work on Monday and Tuesday, according to Julia Devous, director of institutional advancement at Paradise Valley Community College.

Ziegler’s family also has hired a private investigator to look into the incident, Ziegler’s stepfather, Doug McMannus told the Tribune on Friday. He would not comment further.

John Hughes, the private investigator, said he has lived across the street from Ziegler’s family for at least 10 years, and that Andria was the oldest of six daughters.

“Those girls grew up playing basketball in my driveway,” said Hughes, who has two daughters. “Andria was a hard worker, and always looked after her sisters.”

Ziegler was a student in Todd’s abnormal psychology classes, according to Hughes. Todd had previously asked her out, but she initially declined, according to a statement Hughes said he took from Ziegler’s best friend.

“He is a well-liked professor and Andria was impressed with him,” Hughes said. “A lot of kids took his class just because he taught it.”

Todd could not be reached for comment.

How can she have been dead for two days before they found out!? That's crazy!

politisite

The professor siad he picked her up and didn't know her name.  She was his student for a year.

The professor claims to have picked her up and denounced her as an unknown or Jane doe. The county coroner had placed her as a Jane Doe until her parent placed a missing person report with local police and was asked by police to view a person at the coroner’s office who was a Jane Doe, only to find out that it was in fact their daughter.  Hope that helps everyone with that part of this story.

Politisite, Hi thank you for the thought. In all honesty I can not promise you this.  I will try though. I do leave it open to anyone and every one to present - hope you do not mind.

This story is very sad of how he portrayed his selfishness to save himself over the life of another is incredible, let alone one of his own students. Did he save his reputation or his job - NO.

when all he had to do is tell the truth.

It does intrigue me though on the thought of what else this person has done, hidden or gotten away with in the past, considering he was willing to do this to someone whom he know and most likely care about?

UPDATE 5.01.2008

Professor Faces Sex Allegations

A college professor under investigation after a 19-year-old student died at his home is accused of sexual misconduct in an unrelated case that dates back to 2002, a police report reveals. Paradise Valley Community College psychology professor, 51-year-old Michael Todd, was allowed to continue teaching after the girl accused him of making sexual advancements six years ago. The 2002 police report said Todd offered to counsel the student in his private office in Phoenix. During the session, the woman told investigators Todd engaged in sexual misconduct. The student said she told the school's Dean about the incident shortly after it happened, according to the police report.

The school released a brief statement which said officials couldn't confirm or deny that the woman was telling the truth.

Where is the culpability of the school in all of ths? How deep did they dig after a student complained about this guy? They didn't believe the student? What about now? Wonder how well the people who slapped Todd on the wrist in 2002 are sleeping now?
