Seven years later and people are still dying as a result of the 9/11 attacks.  In Afghanistan, on the 7-year anniversary of the terror attacks, two soldiers were killed by insurgents. The latest deaths make 2008 the worst year for military casualties since the war on terror began.

Insurgents killed two U.S. troops in Afghanistan on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks Thursday, making 2008 the deadliest year for American forces since U.S. troops invaded the country in 2001 for sheltering Osama bin Laden.

The deaths brought the number of troops who have died in Afghanistan this year to 113, according to an Associated Press tally, surpassing last year's record toll of 111.

Afghanistan was one of the first targets of America's war on terror.  It was believed that the Taliban government, in power at that time, was harbouring Osama bin Laden, the man believed to have masterminded 9/11.

Less than 2 months after the 9/11 attacks the U.S. had toppled the Taliban in Afghanistan, but a U.S. led military presence has remained in the country.
