Some more information on the accident:
"During sea trials of a nuclear-powered submarine of the Pacific Fleet the firefighting system went off unsanctioned, killing over 20 people, including servicemen and workers," Igor Dygalo said, without giving any details of the circumstances of the accident.
"The submarine is not damaged, its reactor works as normal and radiation levels on the submarine are normal," Captain Dygalo said.
The submarine was ordered to suspend the sea trials and return to port.
Russia's Defence Minister, Anatoly Serdyukov, reported the incident to President Dmitry Medvedev who had ordered a "full and meticulous" investigation and "all possible aid and support to the victims' families," according to the report.
About 20 people are dead and 21 injured in an accident on a Russian nuclear-powered submarine today.
A naval spokesman confirmed the reports, which did not give the name of the submarine specify or where it was located, adding only that it was on exercises at sea and 208 people were on board. An anti-submarine ship, the Admiral Tributs, was providing assistance and taking some of the injured crew from the submarine to port, news agencies reported.

How horrible for the people and their families! I am glad that there was no damage to the reactor which may have posed some danger for ocean life or worse.

I'm also glad that the reactor wasn't damaged, but is it just me or does this news article remind anyone of a Tom Clancy novel that was made into a movie with Sean Connery? :: shakes head :: I don't want to sound uncaring, or unfeeling, but Russia should not even try to have any kind of nuclear program until they have their financial crisis under control. I hear it's getting better, but five years ago, women were selling their children to orphanages for a loaf of bread! Until they've fixed the problems left over from their failed experiment in "Communism" they really should not do anything else that can and will bleed money from the people in Russia.

They have to be nuts to be in a submarine loaded with nuclear bombs and near radioactivity all the time. I certainly see no benefit to submarines being used...Complete waste of money for Americans and Russians if you ask me..... Why have Atomic arsenals? If the day comes again in which we use them....we are assured more than one will be used as one comes flying back... What sense is maintaining these useless weapons? All for nothing.... We spend billions on the idea in using them,.....but never do; because it will mean the end of the world....So where is the logic here? Defending freedom has been to realize if we use these Atomic weapons there will be no freedom left to defend.
Get rid of them....by dismantling them...and shut down the nuclear industry..

I believe that Djermano and Moonwolf have a skewed view of the purpose of a nuclear submarine. The term to research is Mutually Assured Destruction. This capablility assures destruction of the origin of a first strike. Submarine launched missiles are second strike only meaning they are a deterrent against the launching of any nuclear missiles. On the topic of the nuclear industry, people fear that which they do not understand. Nuclear power is one of the cleanest forms of energy that we would be silly to ignore as a stop gap solution to our energy needs. Conservation would be a better move than complaining about an industry that you do not understand.

Try Geothermal Energy....the best and cleanest energy you can find....It's an energy you nuclear people refuse to acknowledge as the ultimate energy source. In fact it is nuclear energy already performing inside the earth.....and all we need to do is drill down to get it. There is no nuclear waste, no deplete uranium that builds up from nuke power stations, no worry about nuclear plants being taken over by terrorists, or an earthquake rattling the nuke plant so severe that we now have a major human crisis. I think we know a lot about nuclear....it's you guys who went down the nuke road and have loss money....and refuse to give up your failed choice. We don't want nuclear power...we want Geothermal Power.
