2010 Census: Chaffetz Distrusts ACORN, Proposes US Post Office
The 2010 Census in the United States has provoked dissent among Republicans over the fact that ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) is to be involved in the process, due to the ACORN controversy that emerged during the 2008 US presidential election campaign. Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz has proposed using the US post office workforce to administer the 2010 census questions instead.
In an interview with Judge Andrew Napolitano on the Glenn Beck Program from Wednesday, June 24, Chaffetz explained his idea to use the US post office as a solution to expressed lack of confidence regarding ACORN's role in the 2010 census. According to Chaffetz, it is problematic to put ACORN, which has been criticized for voter fraud, in a key headhunting role for the census; simultaneously, the US post office purportedly already employs as many workers are as needed to administer the 2010 census.
"So, it just seems to me that we already have a federal workforce in place. They are a trusted organization. And I do not trust ACORN, do not want them to be part of the process. I'd much rather have the postal service execute on this."
Chaffetz called his strategy a "common sense business approach", and called for disccusion with the White House and Democrats in Congress.
The 2010 census will be held April 1, 2010, and gathers US household and population data every ten years.
