A section of the local media is critical of the content in President Obama’s state of the union address because it did not mention Pakistan! It was a state of the union address so the focus had to be on domestic issues like taxes, spending, energy etc—foreign policy did figure but briefly. Ahead of the London conference the US released a policy document on US strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan. This comprehensively covers what the US wants to do in both the countries to meet the clearly stated US objective in the war on terror. It is up to Afghanistan and Pakistan to understand US policy and move in directions that give them the maximum gains in terms of governance and internal security and to tie in with broader US plans for regional stability that have to include India and Iran---US policy would then respond to positive developments.
