22 year old from Ohio dead of swine flu: No Insurance
A 22 year old University of Miami graduate and Ohio resident is dead of swine flu. It is said that she delayed seeking medical treatment due to lack of health insurance.
A 22-year-old woman from Oxford, Ohio, died from swine flu on Wednesday. Kimberly Young graduated from Miami University in December and continued to live in Oxford, Ohio, within Minority Leader John Boehner’s congressional distrct. Reports now indicate that after initially getting sick, Young put off treatment because she was uninsured:
Young became ill about two weeks ago, but didn’t seek care initially because she didn’t have health insurance and was worried about the cost, according to Brent Mowery, her friend and former roommate. […]
On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Young’s condition suddenly worsened and her roommate drove her to McCullough Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, where she was flown in critical condition to University Hospital in Cincinnati.
“That’s the most tragic part about it. If she had insurance, she would have gone to the doctor,” Mowery said.
The blog, American Power , charges the left with "exploiting the death of this young woman" for its own political agenda, and insist that care was available to Ms. Young, but that the girl did not avail herself of it.

The media keeps a tally of the men and women who die in war. Perhaps there should be a daily tally of the number of Americans who die because of delayed or no treatment because they do not have insurance.

American Power is right. While this young woman's death while unmistakably
tragic, was avoidable. The care she needed was available, she just chose not to get it. The left will, of course, use this as an Obamacare rally call and that is tragic.

I would not presume to know the level of sophistication of this 22 year old or if she was cognizant of free services, or she might have felt she could not afford emergency treatment at a hospital. It's not as simple as you have stated, her choice was probably to tough it out because she didnt have any money or insurance.
My daughter did something similar when she was a student when she had bronchitis, and ended up getting a lot sicker than if she had gotten treatment earlier. She waited two weeks before finally asking for some money to go to an urgent care center. She would never have gone to an emergency room because she said she could not pay back the $2,000 it usually ends up costing. In her mind, she was doing the responsible thing.

I rarely use this comments account, except in emergency cases, and this is one" A211..., I could not agree with you more! The right insists "anyone can go to the emergency room"---Oh, really? And get stuck with a bill of thousands for blood and urine tests, exams, and scans? And who is to pay for the antibiotics, cough medicines, which the doctor will prescribe and which tally up to hundreds? And the ER bill cannot be ignored: It will effect credit, etc. And if this girl had gone to the doctor with no money, everyone knows the signs say "No one walks out without paying". So this girl IS dead due to no health insurance, and like A above says, her own daughter may have been likewise with swine flu. I am so angry about this issue I could scream >:( smkovalinsky

SMK: JEEZ! Not to take anything away from the story, but when is the "back door" stuff that you are experiencing going to be straightened out? Is there a projected time line?

It is irresponsible to even suggest using the ER for primary care, and for anyone to suggest this as a remedy for lack of proper insurance is ignorant of how the system works and the impact of cost shifting.
Then trying to politicize a girl's death is just reprehensible. : (
I know how you feel, smk, I feel that way too. : (

and still there are those you say we don't need an affordable health care plan?

The media keeps a tally of the men and women who die in war. Perhaps there should be a daily tally of the number of Americans who die because of delayed or no treatment because they do not have insurance. Oops, sorry. The media quit keeping that score since Teh Won got into office. As for people that die from disease each year (yes, flu included), this is not going to change with or without Obamacare.

Chalk one up for "Lacks Health Care"
Now, let's have a little quiz here. Will we keep track of all those in Canaduh, France, Great Britain, Norway, etc., that do have Gummit Run Health Care, yet despite the heroic efforts of the valiant Doctors and almighty bureaucrats, die anyway?
A) No, of course not.
B) Certainly, I only want the best system
C) Hey, whose propaganda is this anyway?

Tragic story SMK! There is no excuse for what happened to Kimberly Young! But is anyone in the main-stream media covering this story, and are any more details pertaining to this story being circulated? It seems to me that this story could be used as an aid by the Obama administration in its efforts to pass national health care legislation. And that the story would be quite an aid indeed.

i went to emergency room and now have over $2,000 to pay back. I've already been late on my payments and it effect my credit rating. do not go there if u do not have to. go to a local doctor or clinic.
at 20:15 on November 11th, 2009
I agree with Dee. The ER is NOT the place to go if you do NOT have insurance. They can actually tell you where to go if u call them or look online for clinics.
