A 25 metre crater that appeared after a water main burst in a wealthy suburb of Sydney, Australia is expected to cause traffic problems.  The water main burst at 8pm local time, after the evening rush hour, but police in Sydney say it will still cause problems on the Friday morning commute into town.

The 25 metre crater is at the intersection of Victoria and Bellevue roads in Bellevue Hill, a suburb in east Sydney.  The water main break caused massive damage to the road and caused a serious rupture in the gas lines.  Several homes in the area will be without gas supply until repairs can be made and a fire hazard warning is in effect.

"The ruptured main has left a 25-metre crater affecting the footpath and roadway on Victoria Road and also badly damaged a gas supply line," police said in a statement.

"The torrent of water brought down a power pole and swept up to two motor vehicles into nearby Cooper Park, where the water also caused a landslip."

Police said Victoria Rd would be closed indefinitely between Bellevue and Birriga roads, while Bellevue Rd would be closed between Buller St and Victoria Rd.
