3,800 UTMB employees to be laid off

The governing board of the University of Texas voted this afternoon to lay off 3,800 employees at Galveston's University of Texas Medical Branch in the wake of devastating damage from Hurricane Ike.

But several regents reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the medical school on the island.

This is newsworth because the Mayor of Galveston said these layoffs will do more damage to Galveston Island than even Hurricane Ike did.

I've worked in scientific research and I would agree that the Univ. of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston has been important within Texas and within the University of Texas educational system. These layoffs are not good news for the gulf coast area.
