Three college girls from Dickinson University in ND were found dead in their vehicle,  which had been pulled from a pond.

Police say two of the girls had made emergency cell phone calls to two other girls,  indicating that they had encountered some emergency and were in need of help.  Verizon company was able to trace the calls.  As of yet ,  no exact cause of death has been determined.

The girls had been missing since Sunday night.

Some have speculated that perhaps the vehicle was stuck,  and in the dark,  they accidentally drove into the lake.  Other speculations are that some predator was bothering them;  hence the calls for help.  In that scenario,  it would be supposed that they were pushed into the pond in their vehicle after some altercation or crime.

Three college softball players, who vanished Sunday night while at a North Dakota lake where they often went star-gazing, were found dead in their vehicle, which was pulled from a pond.

Police Lt. Rod Banyai said Tuesday night that police are "still investigating" the cause of the deaths.

Kyrstin Gemar, 22, of Grossmont, Calif.; Afton Williamson, 20, of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; and Ashley Neufeld, 21, of Brandon, Manitoba in Canada, all play softball for Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D.

A friend reported getting two phone calls from the two of the women late Sunday evening. The caller mentioned that they were near a lake and water and indicated they needed help before the line went dead, police said.

My heart goes out, but I have to wonder.... how in the world could 3 physically fit, young athletic women - all - simply sit in a vehicle while it sinks in a farm pond and all die???? Like, no one at all could get out the door of a jeep and dog paddle 20 feet to the side of the pond? This is a strange one here.

Well,  all I can think is:  a.  It happened so fast,  in the dark,  and it was a deep pond, and the car sank fast,  and the water pressure would not allow the doors or windows to open   OR b.  someone hurt them,  strangled them,  held them at gunpoint,  and then pushed them,  dead,  in the vehicle into the water.  The coroner's report will be able to see if they had been attacked or not....Terrible story,  they were young and healthy, and it is indeed bizarre.....

The car goes in the water and sinks from the weight of it.  At that point the pressure of the water on the outside makes the doors impossible to open.  The car slowly fills up with water.  The trick is to get the windows down or broken and let the car fill with water so that you can swim out the window or at  that point open the door.  But, people panic and don't realize the electric windows probably still work and they fight the need to let the car fill up quickly.  The car ultimately fills with water and no one has made a move to make it possible to get out.

Oh,  that makes sense,  above,  how tragic.  Maybe people should be taught this when getting their driver's license, in the unlikely event it happens.

My deepest condolences to these girls’ family and friends, I can relate to them we recently lost a good friend on Oct 18, 2009. His car plunged into a pond; there he was pronounced dead. He leaves behind wife of two years marriage and family.  www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/10/police-investigating-death-of-man-found-in-retention-pond.html.  Tragic!

This story does not add up. 3 strong athletic girls can break a window quick enough to prevent drowning, especailly when their life is ending. And phone calls would not have been made if this 'accident' happened so quick & the vehical was sinking...If there was enough time to make a phone call above water, then there was plenty of time to break a window!! There is a missing factor....

I have wondered the same thing,  but what is this missing factor?  Someone did this to them?

Well to everyone saying that they don't understand how perfectly healthy athletic girls didn't escape a sinking vehicle, put yourself in their position. For one it is almost impossible to open a door once the bottom of the door is under water because of the forse of the water excerted on the exterior of the car. Two they may not have had anything that was sharp to break the windows to escape, once the car hits the water the electrical wiring turns off, therefore the inability to roll down the windows. I personally know one of the girls from lake elsinore and she isn't the type of person to be involved in drug use or alcohol use. Something terrible has to have happened and it was a cituation that was impossible for them to survive in. God bless these girls and their families.
