Three journalists of Channel-4, a London-based television news network have been arrested in Sri lanka on charges of tarnishing the image of the government security forces.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka police say three journalists for London-based Channel-4 television news have been arrested on charges of tarnishing the image of the government security forces.

Police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekera says the trio were arrested in the eastern city of Trincomalee on Saturday and investigations are continuing.

Nick Paton Walsh, the channel's Asian correspondent told the Associated Press that he had been arrested along with producer Bessie Du and cameraman Matt Jasper.

Nick Paton Walsh says their arrest was connected to a report filed by them on the condition of camps for war refugees and some alleged sexual abuse in those camps earlier this week.

That is what is media freedom in Sri Lanka !!

Sri Lankan police arrested three journalists for London-based Channel 4 television news Saturday on charges of tarnishing the image of government security forces, authorities said. Police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekera said the trio were arrested in the eastern city of Trincomalee on Saturday. He said investigations are continuing.Nick Paton-Walsh, the channel's Asian correspondent, spoke to the Associated Press by telephone shortly after the arrest, saying that he was being driven to the capital Colombo, along with producer Bessie Du and cameraman Matt Jasper.

The Channel 4 had been covering fierce fighting between government forces and the separatist Tamil Tigers.

Walsh said he believed the arrests were connected to his recent report on conditions for war refugees and alleged sexual abuse in camps for those who fled the northern war zone.

ITN News, which produces Channel 4, confirmed that its reporting team has been ordered to leave the country by the Sri Lankan Defense Minister, "after reporting allegations of abuse and ill-treatment of Tamils held in internment camps."

"Their original report, broadcast on Channel 4 News on 5th May, contained the first independently filmed video from one of the internment camps in the city of Vavuniya in the north of Sri Lanka," ITN said in a statement. "The report contained claims that dead bodies were left where they fell, shortages of food and water, and sexual abuse."

ITN said it would seek an explanation from the Sri Lankan government for the decision to expel the journalists. The government has denied the Channel 4 report.

In recent weeks, the government and aid groups have been struggling to cope with more than 120,000 civilians who fled the war zone, overwhelming displacement camps.

Media rights group have accused the government of carrying out a ruthless campaign against the media and dissidents amid the military's recent successes against rebels.

Journalists are still largely banned from the northern war zone, making it difficult for independent journalists to verify either government or rebel reports of the conflict. The government argues the area is too dangerous for noncombatants.

The government also has come under heavy criticism for a spate of attacks on and arrests of journalists viewed as critical of the offensive against the rebels. The government denies any hand in the suppression of journalists.

According to Amnesty International, at least 14 journalists and Sri Lankans working for media organizations have been killed since the beginning of 2006. Others have been detained, tortured or have disappeared. Amnesty says 20 more have fled the country because of death threats.

Friday, Senior Emergencies Researcher Dr Anna Neistat at Human Rights Watch (HRW), was banned from entering Sri Lanka and few weeks back Jeremy Page from London based 'The Times' was locked in the airport on arrival and was deported the following day.

That is media freedom in Sri Lanka, nice two words.

Dr Anna Neistat was banned from entering Sri Lanka due to misinforming immigration authorities about her profession and purpose of visit.

What do you call a person who lies? A liar!

Can you trust a liar? No way!

Even if a liar lies to find the truth, will the truth be nothing but the truth? What nonsense!

In the context can anyone believe Dr. Neistat would submit a fair and honest report? Never!

It's well and good she was prevented from entering the island.

As such, Dr. Anna Neistat, Human Rights Watch senior researcher should think of changing her vocation to fiction writing, instead of interfering in other people's matters.

Channel 4 is reporting that they've been deported.  Here's the link for the stories, both the deportation one, and the May 5th story the government took offence to.  Good video!

The civilians of Sri Lanka were torchered by the LTTE Terrorist for decades. Have you people reported it all this time. You didn't see them as Terrorist Activities to report them to send your so called western media when thousand of innocent civilians were brutally killed by Prabhakaran Led LTTE Terrorists.

Do you realize that there are things called extremely exaggerated reports from journalists. If you haven't heard about such things just look at Afgan Bombing couple of days back, so that you could see plenty.

Most of the Western media want this brutal terrorist to be alive and you people supporters of terrorists. Imagine if Bin Laden in the situation of Prabhakaran today? I'm sure all of you together with USA will carpet bomb the entire Country without leaving a trace of Sri Lanka to get him.

Suggest you leave it for Sri Lankan government to handle. I think you have enough to report on human rights violations of your own people and USA in many places in the world which you have no right to step in to.
