30 Nations Recognize Libya Rebel Group
Gaddafi Regime Deemed Illegitimate by over 30 Nations, Including USA
More than 30 nations have recognized the NTC (National Transitional Council) as the legitimate ruling body of Libya.
The move was made at a meeting in Istanbul, attended by representatives from various nations coordinating policy on Libya.
Muammar Gaddafi's regime is, by extension, deemed illegitimate. The announcement will mean a funding boost for the Benghazi-based rebels, since supporting them has been made mainstream.
The move is mostly symbolic: as long as Gaddafi has his army, he has a fighting chance. As long as Libya has oil, the rest of the world will be forced to deal with him one way or another. Gaddafi, as expected, denounced the NATO-led alliance's move.
