NP Rank:
40 Uzbek children Infected with HIV in hospital
This is shocking , how any neglegence can infect children with HIV. The world is putting millions of dollars for the awareness of AIDS, but ths kind of incidents dilutes the effort to make world HIV free.
More than 40 young children have been infected with HIV at a hospital in Uzbekistan, officials have said.
Health authorities told the BBC that an investigation into the infections of the mainly new-born babies was taking place in the eastern town of Namangan.
The United Nations says Central Asia has one of the world's fastest-growing HIV infection rates.
Unsafe blood supplies and contaminated equipment are often blamed for spreading the infection.
The infections in Uzbekistan are just the latest case of mass contamination in a health facility in the region.
In August, a court in Kyrgyzstan convicted nine medical workers of infecting 24 children with HIV, while last year 21 medical workers in Kazakhstan were found guilty of infecting dozens of babies. The staff concerned pleaded not guilty, saying poor hygiene conditions were to blame.
The Uzbek cases were discovered in October, and have reportedly been referred to prosecutors.
But they have not been reported in the local media, which is tightly controlled by the government.
The officials who spoke to the BBC's Uzbek service were only prepared to comment on condition of anonymity.
Aid workers say the stigma surrounding HIV/Aids and the atmosphere of secrecy means that many outbreaks of hospital-acquired infection do not get reported.

Thanks for comment,
well the reason behind this tragedy is not clear, well it was intentional or not, the secrecy behind the whole episode makes it much worse.

This is horrible and needs some drastic actions as well as maybe some penalties. Maybe even International pressures.

You are right Mr Paschen
these kind of negeligence should be heavily punished, if possible use Hamurabbian law.

Yeah, but spare a thought for the conditions under which the staff are forced to operate in! They probably are severely starved of equipment, maybe even training about HIV. Don't forget that we in the Global North did really stupid things when we first encountered HIV. I suspect that, if they did not re-use needles for blood transfusions, many people would have died for insufficient blood supplies! What do you do in such a situation?

I would agree with you Gerry and I do believe the main culprit may not even be with the staff nor the aid workers, but rather with and political and Bureaucratic machine that needs dismantling and restructuring with some transparencies and a touch of democracy.

Well there is always readymade excuces to make for any type of misdeeds, but we need to take proper action to stop this kind of happenings. We kill several thosands of lives every year and pass on excuses to escape from the moral burden. But searching logic from the past is not going to solve the problem.
