Nearly 50 protesters were arrested on Triumfalnaya Square in Moscow after attending an anti-Kremlin rally. The Russian opposition leader Eduard Limonov was also detained.
Nearly 200 protesters had gathered on the square and were shouting anti-Putin slogans, but the rally was quickly stopped by riot police, as they did not have permission to protest, according to Moscow police spokeswoman Zhanna Ozhiminia.
Moscow human rights activist Lev Ponomarev called the actions by the security forces, who were present in great numbers, as 'completely disproportionate'.
