TOKYO: A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale shook the Tokyo region early Thursday, Japan's weather agency said.
There were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami alert was issued.
The quake struck at 1:02 am (1602 GMT Wednesday) in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Ibaraki prefecture northeast of Tokyo, the meteorological agency said.
The earthquake, which struck at a depth of 20 kilometres, was powerful enough to rattle buildings in central Tokyo.

ifindtrends, thanks for getting the news out quickly.

I see some reports say the quake had a 6.7 magnitude.

Is the Pacific Rim of Fire more active recently? Is there a really big one on the near horizon?

Don't know what's going on here wasn't there another Earthquake recently not long ago this month somewhere else.  Then the Cyclone in America that happened a few days ago in May 2008 and now the bombs going off around London Essex and Heathrow Airport UK had been evacutated and missile test for real.  What's really going on here?

Very scary things happening in the world all at once.  Very unsual for it to happen all at once within the same week.

I'm worried.

I live in Japan, about an hour from Tokyo.
I was in Tokyo on wednesday to visit family, and my hotel room was shaking quite alot. I awoke at around 1:00 am to having the whole room shake quite violently. All I could hear was the glass shower door in our bathroom opening and closing and things falling off from around the basin.

I woke up my husband, whom I initially thought was shaking the bed and made sure he was ready to go in case of an emergency. I got my 5 month old in her baby capsule, and grabbed the diaper bag. The quake itself didn't last all that long, however the high rise (which was at Tokyo Bay) was swaying quite alot. I called  my parents to see if they were ok, I said it would be fine to sleep again so we all went back to bed even though the building was swaying. About an hour or so later, there was another one which seemed a little longer than the first, but not as bad. I went into the hallway and tried to walk to the room my family stayed. The hallway was moving so much I felt very disorientated. None of us got to sleep until 4am.

There was a few more quakes around then, even on the morning of the 9th. not as big.
We were concerned mainly because that area is long over due for the big one. So I am very glad to be out of Tokyo, and safer in my house. High rises are not very good during an earthquake.

I believe if this was to happen in any other country, damage could have been done as well as injuries etc. In Japan our buildings are constructed to withstand these events, and have support beams and brackets under the house to encourage the house to rock with the earthquake rather than against it.
