While Americans are relishing this historic moment, many Taiwanese fear a backslide in their civil liberties after a series of incidents in which the Nationalist authorities have silenced individual freedoms of speech in an effort to appease China.

Today, citizens from across Taiwan once again took to the streets to demand the Ma administration and a visiting Chinese official to respect Taiwanese democracy and sovereignty.
