NP Rank:
60 US drone hits killed 14 al-Qaeda men, 687 Pakistani civilians
A report has made some important disclosures about the US drone strikes inside Pakistan between January 14, 2006 and April 8, 2009. It reveals that out of 60 such strikes, actual targets were hit only in 10 attacks. Only 14 wanted al-Qaeda leaders and 687 innocent Pakistani civilians were killed in these strikes, which means around 49 Pakistani civilians were killed to kill one wanted al-Qaeda leader.
LAHORE: Of the 60 cross-border predator strikes carried out by the Afghanistan-based American drones in Pakistan between January 14, 2006 and April 8, 2009, only 10 were able to hit their actual targets, killing 14 wanted al-Qaeda leaders, besides perishing 687 innocent Pakistani civilians. The success percentage of the US predator strikes thus comes to not more than six per cent.
Figures compiled by the Pakistani authorities show that a total of 701 people, including 14 al-Qaeda leaders, have been killed since January 2006 in 60 American predator attacks targeting the tribal areas of Pakistan. Two strikes carried out in 2006 had killed 98 civilians while three attacks conducted in 2007 had slain 66 Pakistanis, yet none of the wanted al-Qaeda or Taliban leaders could be hit by the Americans right on target. However, of the 50 drone attacks carried out between January 29, 2008 and April 8, 2009, 10 hit their targets and killed 14 wanted al-Qaeda operatives. Most of these attacks were carried out on the basis of intelligence believed to have been provided by the Pakistani and Afghan tribesmen who had been spying for the US-led allied forces stationed in Afghanistan.
The remaining 50 drone attacks went wrong due to faulty intelligence information, killing hundreds of innocent civilians, including women and children. The number of the Pakistani civilians killed in those 50 attacks stood at 537, in which 385 people lost their lives in 2008 and 152 people were slain in the first 99 days of 2009 (between January 1 and April 8).
Of the 50 drone attacks, targeting the Pakistani tribal areas since January 2008, 36 were carried out in 2008 and 14 were conducted in the first 99 days of 2009. Of the 14 attacks targeting Pakistan in 2009, three were carried out in January, killing 30 people, two in February killing 55 people, five in March killing 36 people and four were conducted in the first nine days of April, killing 31 people.
Of the 14 strikes carried out in the first 99 days of April 2009, only one proved successful, killing two most wanted senior al-Qaeda leaders - Osama al Kini and Sheikh Ahmed Salim Swedan. Both had lost their lives in a New Year’s Day drone strike carried out in the South Waziristan region on January 1, 2009.
Kini was believed to be the chief operational commander of al-Qaeda in Pakistan and had replaced Abu Faraj Al Libi after his arrest from Bannu in 2004. Both men were behind the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Dares Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya, which killed 224 civilians and wounded more than 5,000 others.
There were 36 recorded cross-border US predator strikes inside Pakistan during 2008, of which 29 took place after August 31, 2008, killing 385 people. However, only nine of the 36 strikes hit their actual targets, killing 12 wanted al-Qaeda leaders. The first successful predator strike had killed Abu Laith al Libi, a senior military commander of al-Qaeda who was targeted in North Waziristan on January 29, 2008. The second successful attack in Bajaur had killed Abu Sulayman Jazairi, al-Qaeda’s external operations chief, on March 14, 2008. The third attack in South Waziristan on July 28, 2008, had killed Abu Khabab al Masri, al-Qaeda’s weapons of mass destruction chief. The fourth successful attack in South Waziristan on August 13, 2008, had killed al-Qaeda leader Abdur Rehman.
The fifth predator strike carried out in North Waziristan near Miranshah on Sept 8, 2008 had killed three al-Qaeda leaders, Abu Haris, Abu Hamza, and Zain Ul Abu Qasim. The sixth successful predator hit in the South Waziristan region on October 2008 had killed Khalid Habib, a key leader of al-Qaeda’s paramilitary Shadow Army.
The seventh such attack conducted in North Waziristan on October 31, 2008 had killed Abu Jihad al Masri, a top leader of the Egyptian Islamic group. The eighth successful predator strike had killed al-Qaeda leader Abdullah Azzam al Saudi in east of North Waziristan on November 19, 2008.
The ninth and the last successful drone attack of 2008, carried out in the Ali Khel region just outside Miramshah in North Waziristan on November 22, 2008, had killed al-Qaeda leader Abu Zubair al Masri and his Pakistani fugitive accomplice Rashid Rauf.
According to the figures compiled by the Pakistani authorities, a total of 537 people have been killed in 50 incidents of cross-border US predator strikes since January 1, 2008 to April 8, 2009, averaging 34 killings per month and 11 killings per attack. The average per month killings in predator strikes during 12 months of 2008 stood at 32 while the average per attack killings in the 36 drone strikes for the same year stood at 11.
Similarly, 152 people have been killed in 14 incidents of cross-border predator attacks in the tribal areas in the first 99 days of 2009, averaging 38 killings per month and 11 killings per attack.
Since September 3, 2008, it appears that the Americans have upped their attacks in Pakistani tribal areas in a bid to disrupt the al-Qaeda and the Taliban network, which they allege is being used to launch cross border ambushes against the Nato forces in Afghanistan.
The American forces stationed in Afghanistan carried out nine aerial strikes between September 3 and September 25, 2008, killing 57 people and injuring 38 others. The attacks were launched on September 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 15, 17, 22 and September 27. However, the September 3, 2008 American action was unique in the sense that two CH-47 Chinook transport helicopters landed in the village of Zawlolai in the South Waziristan Agency with ground troops from the US Special Operation Forces, fired at three houses and killed 17, including five women and four sleeping children.
Besides the two helicopters carrying the US Special Forces Commandos, two jet fighters and two gun-ship helicopters provided the air cover for the half-an-hour American operation, more than a kilometre inside the Pakistani border.
The last predator strike on [April 8, 2009] was carried out hardly a few hours after the Pakistani authorities had rejected an American proposal for joint operations in the tribal areas against terrorism and militancy, as differences of opinion between the two countries over various aspects of the war on terror came out into the open for the first time.
The proposal came from two top US visiting officials, presidential envoy for the South Asia Richard Holbrooke and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen. However, the Pakistani military and political leadership reportedly rejected the proposal and adopted a tough posture against a barrage of increasing US predator strikes and criticism emanating from Washington, targeting the Pakistan Army and the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and creating doubts about their sincerity in the war on terror and the fight against al-Qaeda and Taliban.

To all my dear friends,
This story is of great importance for me and people of tribal areas. I am just asking question from Mr. Hussain how many people have been killed in the bombardment by Pakistani planes and gunship helicopters in Bajaur Agency. I want to bring in your kind notice that some 4000 people have been killed in Bajaur Agency only in seven months. Half a million people have migrated to other places from Bajaur Agency. What you will say about the killings of tribesmen by Pakistani troops? I think you must express your views about this situation. Why the people of tribal areas are being killed? Pakistani people are also killing the people of tribal areas. Americans are also killing the tribesmen. What are their crimes? But I want to tell you the people of Bajaur Agency have suffered a lot at the hands of security forces. Now they will never raise objections over the US drone attacks., Dirty politics of Pakistan have caused the killing of thousands of people. Thousands of people were forced to migrate. I am still unclear. What is this? What is my crime that my home has been hit? What is our crime that the security forces have occupied the Bajaur Press Club. What is my crime that I have been dismissed from my job? What is my crime that now wife and children are facing death due to hunger? Please tell me about my crimes.

Yes, more tragic than the civilian casualties is that these caculties add fuel to the fire.

Thank you for this story hussain. I would like to see some comments on how this is going over with the general population in Pakistan. Are there any newsclippings commenting on these drone strikes. For example, what is the opposition to the government saying about this. Are there any comments on what is being said by the public removed from the tribal areas?

Some time it is beyond common mans perception, why we fight al all?the egoism of nationhood, religion, race....have killed several thousand people still we do not ready to accept the reality. We are beahaving like puppets in the hands of some western power.
And unfortunately our so called leaders are so narrow minded that they cant see the future, and for some commission the forget the welfare of people.

I want to bring one thing in your kind notice that the dirty politics in Pakistan have been causing widespread death and destruction in Pakistan. On the one hand Pakistan is the frontline state in war on terror and on the hand it has been opposing the war. On the one hand Pakistani leaders are getting dollars from US and on the other hand they have been cursing the US. What is this? This dirty politics have made the life for the poor people of tribal areas as hell. Presently I have been living in the hell. It is just becuase the corrupt rulers of Pakistan and their stooges, who are also in journalism.
at 12:33 on April 10th, 2009
Dear Voiceforpeace, I have learnt that you try to hoodwink NP members by crying about 'starvation' of your family while you himself told one of your friends that you are getting dollars and I think the same dollars have compelled you to justify the US drone attacks and also malign Pakistan.
at 02:57 on April 11th, 2009
Mr Hussain, thank you very much for making disclosure that I am getting dollars from the United States for justifying the drone attacks. May be I am the cousin of president Bush or President Obama. I think you are knowing me, therefore, you also know my friends. For your kind information so far I am without friend. I think I am not justifying US drone attacks rather the Pakistani media has been creating justification for more drone attacks. The Pakistani media is still busy in creating terrorist characters. Actually there are some powers, who do not want peace, therefore, they have been promoting terrorism. I think the Pakistani as well as the Western media is being used by terrorists for creating justification for more wars. If I am wrong forgive me, but this is the fact.

Thanks for bringing in the story, billions of dollar of mercy package is going to take some toll.Remedy lies in economic empowerment, but pakistani leaders have forgot he baisis lesson of making of the true nation.
at 01:58 on April 10th, 2009
Amitjha, Pakistan is not getting any 'mercy package' rather the dollars being given to the country are peanuts as compared to the loss of lives, civilian as well as military, and economic repercussions. You are right, Pakistani leaders have miserably failed in defending even soveriegnty of the country. However, Pakistani people have no desire for the US dollars nor are these funds bringing any good to them. Only rulers know why they are playing the role of the American stooges.
at 02:11 on April 10th, 2009
Perfectly said, so you want to say the elected government is not following the sentiments of masses?
at 02:17 on April 10th, 2009
Yes, as far as the futile 'war on terror' is concerned. You know the poorest of the poor in Pakistan are ready to live without the US dollars but the effluent class is bent upon sinking the ship of the country.
at 02:29 on April 10th, 2009
Amitjha, most of the eastren countries have these problems where the goverments dont really give much attention and importance to sentiments of masses or have the grand view of things like the west has.
as far as goverment is concerned it never asked for the money in the first place before being dragged into the war of terror which was a pure US war and now has changed into an own war.
I will like to point out to this story to help you better understand why dollars are not so attractive to Pakistan.

Dear Voice and Hussain,
A tear comes to my eye as I read your stories and NO... you did not commit any crime and neither did your family and friends. While it may be true that there are terrorists hiding out and perpertrating horrible crimes in your country, it is also true that there are many innocents ultimately paying the price with, poverty, disease, death and other atrocities against our fellow humans.
You are not alone my friend, as we in America have also suffered similar crimes against our family, friends and neighbors over the years. You must remain strong and a Voice for your people by informing others of the crimes being committed in your country as you have here, otherwise the killing and dislocation will continue.
Please understand that although there may be American soldiers participating in this so-called war on terror, the American Public shares in your sorrow and does not condone attacks and/or the killing of innocent civilians. Americans understand and Americans are also being killed as evidenced by one of the most horrible atrocities in my wonderful America being the recent destruction of the World Trade Center in NYC where thousands were killed in an instant as terrorist planes crashed into the buildings, causing millions of family members and friends around the world to suffer to this day. One must also understand that terrorism in itself is a terrible, terrible thing and needs to be wiped off the face of the Earth in all its forms. Government sponsored terrorism included.
We (all nations) must be diligent and work to stop atrocities against innocent civilians wherever atrocities exist and make sure we have leaders in place who will make the correct decisions that benefit all mankind and take power from those who do indeed abuse power.
I feel for you my friend and it is through world/net messages such as yours, that the world will be informed and ultimately work diligently to bring an end to all war and terrorism on the planet. Hopefully, you can get some comfort in knowing that there ARE people in America and throughout the world who are actively fighting for your peace, as well as in other countries by taking action in exposing and voicing concerns through various means to our leaders. Unfortunately, no matter what country, ALL government leaders are slow to listen and take action due to the elitists in contol who lust after territories, money and power.
One way you and your people can help is by helping America find Osama Bin Laden. Once this criminal is captured or killed, we can hopefully start seeing an end to the primary reason America got involved in this horrible war that has spilled over from Iraq to Afganistan, into Pakistan and others and eventually bring our sons and daughters home where they belong.. with us, as yours belong with you. Spread the word throughout your region and help us find Bin Laden. It could be a step in the right direction for your family and countrymen (and ours) to end the sorrow and crimes against innocent people.
In closing, I want to Thank You and the original story provider-Hussain, for reporting these stories. Now that I have been informed, I will inform others in America in hope that this knowledge will help to someday bring peace to Pakistan and other countries around the world.
I pray and wish you and your family Peace and I know God will be with you!

Your tear has brought tears in my eyes my dear friend urealeus. Actually at the moment I am in very difficult situation. Believe me half of my hometown has been bulldozed. Thousands of people mostly women and children have been killed in the mad war in Bajaur Agency. But the people against whom the operation carried by Pakistani forces are still alive and enjoying the life. Only the poor people mostly the women and children have been killed. Actually there are some people, who playing politics on the war which is very bad. I think terrorism is a bad thing. Terrorists are criminals. But here the situation is totally different. Terrorists have still been getting hero status in Pakistani and even the US media. I am still unclear who has brought Osama bin Laden and other dreaded terrorists to tribal areas. Actually the whole system in Pakistan is corrupt. But now the poor people have been paying the price of corruption by the rulers. I think the big terrorists are the rulers of Pakistan, who still trying to deceive the world. There must clear stand on the issue of terrorism. Either the terrorists should be declared as heroes, who are fighting the Pakistan's war or they should be declared as the criminals or foreign agents fighting war against Pakistan. Now the killing must be stopped. I want to tell you that now the people of tribal areas are ready to hand over the dreaded terrorists to the US if they are really living in their areas.
There are many questions. There are many people, who are involved in this dirty game, but just think of a child who have lost his both parents in the war on terror standing on the debris of his home. What will be his feeling? I think he will certainly be asking God the Great to destroy this whole world. He will certainly be asking God the Great to send the whole people to the hell. We have suffered a lot due to the dirty game of Pakistani and US rulers. The people of tribal areas have been killed in such a large number, which I cannot explain. One thing I want to tell you now the people of tribal areas openly expressing their hatredness against terrorists. Now they think enough is enough. Why I have been punished? Why? I know I will face more hardship for speaking the truth, but now I cannot control myself. Now I am requesting all Pakistanis to stop playing politics on the tribal areas. I think the Americans and tribesmen can settle their issues.
Please stop the killing of innocent people. Please start speaking the truth. I suspect about the report. I think so far no one has visited the tribal areas to ascertain the facts. This is just the presumption. I think this is not a good journalism. I think we must use our journalism for the peace not for the war. If the Pakistani rulers are needing dollars then let them directly talk to their US masters. We must not play into their hands.

It is most unfortunate for you being in a war-torn part of your country. Aside from the attack on the World Trade Center, many Americans living today do not realize the true horrors of war, except mostly for our soldiers and veterans. It is always the poor, underpriveledged, uneducated and those who lack any power who die and suffer the most. It is the ugly face of war... any war... for any reason. Most war is unjustified and is controled by the elite of the world. They and their children are usually safe from its death and scars so the battle for power continues. We need to root out terrorism and cut it off before it is allowed to grow. Educate and inform your people and let them know what a horrible sin it is to harm another human being no matter their nationality. We are all God's creatures on the same planet, under the same sun, in this one great universe.
Please check out a video I created, it might make one sad but speaks the truth.
http://my.nowpublic.com/world/lives-balance-world-financial-domination
Government corruption must also be stopped. If a government is corrupt, it should be replaced with a Just government. There are strength in numbers. Those in government are but a few. Get your message out and take control of you country and through the will of the people, you will ultimately prevail one day and be free from tyranny and the plagues associated that stem from corruptness.
Your people must not think terrorists are heroes, for they are not. How can one who commits all kinds of crimes against innocent others by blowing themselves up in a crowd or through other means be considered a hero? Did the innocent ask to be killed? Do the innocents ask these terrorists to kill and mame their family and neighbors? I don't think so. Those who look up to terrorists in your country remind me of some young people in mine that similarly look up to the criminal gangs who also kill and reak havoc on the streets of America. Although not as criminal as war, but just as evil with similar results.
Also understand, that terrorists DO NOT achieve any type of "hero-status" in America or the American media as you mention. Terrorists and Terrorism is despised in American and Americans will NOT ALLOW it to exist in America or elsewhere in the world. We will fight until the last terrorist is either captured or killed.
Pakistani's must also be made to understand that even when Taliban and al'Quieda ceases to exist the money can come into the people's hands and America will remain a friend because that is what America stands for, even with its internal problems, Americans always comes to the aid of a friend.
Your people should know that by surrendering the terrorists, your country and people can be freed from this war and occupation by foriegn troops and also. Information and Education is the key. With Knowledge, people are set free. They should also be made aware that America is not against the people of Pakistan and that in our hearts and minds, we are not there to intentionally harm your families and neighbors who are innocent. They must be made aware who the true enemy is and aid the forces allied in uprooting the evil that terrorism unleashes on the world as if it were a "Pandora's Box"
In America we have a saying that comes from the Christian Bible where Jesus said.... "Know the Truth and the Truth will set you free. I'm sure your religion teaches similar. Pakistani's must know the truth. One of my favorite Christmas songs is: (actually, it is one of my favorite songs) begins with:
"Let there be Peace on Earth and Let it Begin with ME.

Thank you very much my dear friend aurealeus. I think you are understanding the problem. The main problem is the rampant corruption in Pakistan. Pakistani rulers did not learn anything except corruption. It is due to their corruption that now the very existence of the country is danger. I am really happy after reading your view. Our main problem is illeteracy. Pakistan has come into being some 60 years, but it has always been ruled by the fuedals. Fuedals do not want to educate the people as in that case they will lose the power. Bajaur Agency has merged with Pakistan in 1973. Before its merger it was a small state where the people were leading a happy life. Now the corrupt political agents, who are the administrative heads of agencies have been looting the people. One political agent earn Pakistani rupees 500 million in one agency. The money comes to the political agent through smuggling of drugs. The Pakistani rulers have no interest in correcting the situation in tribal areas as this is not in their interest. At the moment they have been looting the innocent people and also getting dollars from the United States. What a irony it is?
at 08:43 on April 10th, 2009
I understand as do all free-thinking people. People of the United States have also experienced similar problems in the past by discriminating and refusing to educate, i.e., certain races and class of citizens including a whole host of other civil rights violations but all this has changed over time and continues to change one day at a time. Not without a fight or struggle but over time, people can and do prevail. Do not give up hope. The time might not be now for your present situation, but through your preseverance, your children and childrens children, will someday achieve the peace and freedom you wholeheartedly deserve.
What is ironic is the same old story has been playing out throughout History. All that has changed is the time, places and people.
What is most unfortunate is shown through a quote made famous by George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel saying:
"History Teaches Us That Man Learns Nothing From History"
and another by John Emerich Edward Dalber Acton who said:
"Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
but we have to look on the bright side of life and continue to work towards goals that will bring peace and the protection of human and natural resources if our children, the human race and the planet is to survive.

Sept. 11th 2 planes over 3000. This isn't a pillow fight. And, I'm no redneck pounding my fist yell'n "Eye for a eye". This is the world, the real world. So stop the bleeding heart Mr.Left reactions and grow up.
